There’s an interesting back story to Anzio Heights – this family-friendly Staffordshire site was once an army barracks and Polish resettlement camp, and that means this place now holds heritage status.
You’ll see some of the old buildings as you wander around here, but thankfully the vibe is a much friendlier and more welcoming one than you’d have found during the army era. It’s now home to things like a play area and a picnic area, and it’s got nice modern amenities including bathrooms and charging facilities. You’ll also be able to meet the site’s pet donkeys while you’re here.
Just outside the quiet village of Blackshaw Moor, this site is well placed for touring the nearby Peak District National Park – perhaps with walks around The Roaches or bike rides along the Manifold Way. Watersports and fishing are also close by at Rudyard Lake, and you can mix up the outdoor activities with trips to places like Peak Wildlife Park or Alton Towers.
The pretty spa town of Buxton is 15 minutes’ drive away but your closest town is Leek, five minutes’ drive away and a good source of shops and places to eat. Prefer to get out on foot? A farm shop and pub are within walking distance.
