Golden hour on site
A peaceful spot

  • Peaceful wild camping at a farmland site in the Peak District
  • A 15-minute drive from the towns of Buxton and Bakewell
  • Less than an hour from Alton Towers theme park; near the Monsal Trail
Relaxing among green fields, trekking through the hills of the Peak District and settling down of an evening in a traditional village pub… If that sounds like your dream getaway then Burrs Manor Wild Camping, a mile from the village of Chelmorton in the Peak District, should be the very spot for you. The site is in a top spot for walking and cycling getaways, close to many of the waymarked trails crisscrossing the Peak District. The site is three miles from the start of the Monsal Trail, where you can hire bikes or explore the former railway line on foot or horseback, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the starts of the High Peak Trail and the Tissington Trail. You can stay active on site with a game of footgolf (book in advance) or just idle around in the peace and quiet of the countryside farmland, taking in the view over the farmhouse towards the peaks. To unwind in the evenings, head to the traditional village pub in nearby Chelmorton, a 25-minute walk away, to have a bite to eat and knock one back in the beer garden. If you’d prefer to handle all the cooking yourself, barbecues are welcome on site and the towns of Buxton and Bakewell are nearby when you need to stock up on supplies.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Friendly staff. Facilities cleaned regularly but very basic.

Disliked Very loud group on the site, which ruined the night and got very little sleep. They had music playing, along with a lot of shouting from before 21:00 until 2:00. It would be good if campsite staff could do a lap of the campsite at 23:00 to confirm noise was kept to a minimum.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful scenery, so peaceful and quiet. My 2.5 year old daughter absolutely loved having a massive field to run around on! The land owner Annie was so lovely and even let us use her bell tent for our second night due to us not sleeping great on our first night with 2 big labradors! Loved it here and will definitely be back!

Bella bell tent (large, no pets)

Liked On arrival we found Burrs manor to be in a great location, a great base for exploring Buxton! The views are unmatched, you will get a stunning sunset and sunrise its just beautiful. We enjoyed the peaceful nature of the site and it was great for spending quality family time together.

Disliked On arrival the bell tent was not quite what we expected! It was smaller than we thought, quite dirty with grass and bugs as the doors were left open (a-lot of wildlife had entered) and there was no double futon or fairy lights as listed. Coming with two children and only one blow up bed with us we asked the owner for a bit of assistance and they were quick and happy to accommodate. This made up for a tiny bit of disappointment, we would definitely stay here in our own tent. The only reason for booking the bell tent was so we could avoid doing our big set up for one night after a week of both me and my partner working!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The views were absolutely stunning. The campsite was really near a supermarket yet it was still out in the countryside. It was really easy to access too. The showers were warm and the water pressure was good. The campsite also lied on some really stunning walks so we didn't even have to drive to the start of a hike which was amazing. I was so impressed the first time I stayed that I immediately booked again and was just as impressed.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely little site, will definitely be back again. Owner extremely friendly, abd gave good local advice for us and the kids on where to go for secluded water activities that met all our hopes. Good clean facilities

Disliked Only critique would be, that for the amount of pitches avaliable, there is limited toulet/shower facilities.

Local attractions

There’s lots more to do in the Peak District National Park than follow trails: abseil from the viaduct at Millers Dale, explore the spectacular dams of Derwent Valley or dive below ground at Blue John Cavern – all less than an hour from Burrs Manor. The nearby towns of Buxton and Bakewell are must-visit spots too: in Buxton, go below the earth’s surface once more at Poole’s Cavern, stand under the stunning Devonshire dome, or stroll through the Pavilion Gardens. And in Bakewell? There’s plenty to see and do here too, but the one thing you must try is a Bakewell pudding... Plenty of old houses are in the area for historic and cultural days too: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Tissington Hall are each less than 30 minutes from Burrs Manor, and The Old Manor, White Peak Estate, Little Moreton Hall, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall are all within an hour’s drive. Too sedate? A more high-octane experience awaits on the rides at Alton Towers theme park, a 50-minute drive from Burrs Manor. For something that falls somewhere in the middle, try a treetop adventure full of zip lines and rope courses at Go Ape, 15 minutes from the site.
