  • Peaceful five-acre farm meadow on the edge of Thornton village
  • Bletchley Park 20 minutes’ drive; Oxford 45 minutes
  • Pet-friendly; a few minutes’ walk from the River Great Ouse
Fancy a break within a splendid rural landscape, down by the riverside? (Right by the River Great Ouse, to be precise.) Then, Riverside Camping might be the site for you. This family-oriented spot on a working farm sits between Buckingham (10 minutes’ drive) and Milton Keynes (15 minutes), on the edge of the village of Thornton, a few minutes’ walk from the gorgeous Ouse Valley Way. With five acres of meadow to pitch up and relax in, it’s also an uncrowded spot. Amenities are simple, but they include basics like access to a hot shower and a flushing toilet (additional portable toilets are brought in for busy weekends). Handily for tourers, the site also has capacity to deal with waste from caravans. Kids and pets are welcome, and there are plenty of areas nearby where dogs can be walked; however, please note that this is a peaceful site: quiet hours apply between 10.30pm and 7.30am, and there should be no noise after midnight. There’s lots in the surrounding area to keep the entire family occupied: there’s Milton Keynes for bowling, indoor skiing or climbing; Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park (20 minutes) for animal encounters and experiences; and Silverstone (25 minutes) for speed demons. For food shops, restaurants and a farmers’ market, head into Buckingham, where other attractions include an ancient gaol and a public leisure centre. Pick up any breakfast bits while you’re in town, but no need to purchase any eggs – they get delivered to the site for guests to buy.

What customers say

This quiet riverside park offers a chill vibe with great staff, especially Jay. Guests love the roomy sites, clean washrooms, and peaceful nature. While some amenities are simple, most find them fine and well-kept. Occasional issues: road noise, tough taxi access, and extra toilet upkeep in busy times. Recommended for a calm country getaway.

Liked Everything! Great basic camp site, lovely countryside location on the river. Facilities are basic but everything you need. Great base for the national bowl which is why we were there. Would stay again if visiting the area.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We were a group of four families with teenagers from London who regularly camp together.

The campsite is spacious and quiet. There were several other groups and individual campers/camper vans but far enough away from each other. We had lots of space to camp together and play rounders, badminton etc.

Note, the onsite food hut is only open for functions. There were no eggs to purchase despite this being advertised on the website.

The two useable portaloos were generally always clean. Bring a torch if you want to use them at night!

There is lots of hot water in the three showers. Two of them are open air with a shower curtain.
On Saturday morning one of the three showers was broken but it was fixed in the afternoon.

Finally, the onsite manager (who lives in a caravan in the camping field) was very friendly and helpful.

Disliked We travelled to Riverside Camping for the river (we brought kayaks etc) but due to the drought the river was stagnant. Even if the river was flowing there are signs that say "no swimming". We could have called and checked the status of this beforehand but didn't.

Unfortunately, the stagnant smell from the river lingered across the campsite which was unpleasant at times.

I would suggest the toilets need to be monitored more frequently for overflowing bins and toilet roll.

Note, we do always bring toilet roll/hand soap when camping as we appreciate they are not always provided.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely tranquil spot by the river. Facilities although basic were superb. Gas shower was really good. Clean and tidy.

Disliked The smell from the stagnant area of the river Ouse was a little off putting, due to reduced flow from a tree fallen across the river. Not sure who's responsible for that. But might be worth investigating.

Local attractions

National Trust - Stowe Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) is a splendid Georgian estate dotted with architectural follies, monuments and statues. One of the five temples on the grounds is adorned with 16 busts of notable great British figures, from William Shakespeare and Elizabeth I, to Isaac Newton and John Milton. On the southern fringes of Milton Keynes, spread over several blocks, Bletchley Park (20 minutes) is the place to learn all about Alan Turing and his Enigma machine, which allowed to break the code used by the German navy during World War II. Stroll through the streets of Oxford (45 minutes) admiring the various university colleges, then step inside the spectacular Bodleian Library to check out the 18th-century Radcliffe Camera (a circular reading room) and the atmospheric Duke Humfrey’s Library. Displays at the Ashmolean Museum include an Egyptian mummy and a Japanese samurai armour.
