  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery, quad biking and other adventure sports
Zebras, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Resort is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting. The team at Marwell Resort have been instructing for more than 25 years, so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. Please note that many of these activities have a minimum age restriction applied- please check directly with the site. The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife. Marwell Resort has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and wifi. There's also an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg 15 minutes' drive away at Westlands Farm Shop).

What customers say

This family park has roomy spots & heaps to do, like soft play, mini-golf & bushwalks. Staff are legends, facilities spotless, and it's a cracker spot near Marwell Zoo. While a few mentioned shower hiccups or noise, most loved it and wanna come back. The restaurant & bar get a big thumbs up.

Liked Nothing

Disliked The toilet block was very unclean, some of the toilets were closed for refurbishment. We were advised in advance that there was restricted access to the Gravel pitches. However we were not told the whole site was swamped with Water and most of the site was not accessible to vehicles and even for dog walking. We were put into the "communal Area" which was no more than a car park. This was also very wet and muddy. The overall experience was very disappointing. We should have had the opportunity to re book an alternative date when the site conditions improved.

Liked The reception staff were very friendly

Disliked I was really unhappy that the original pitch we booked was unavailable due to the ground being so uneven due to excess water and the alternative we were given was basically a car park which was also absolutely soaking. We weren't told in advance or offered any kind of refund for the inconvenience.
The shower and toilet block was also out of action and the alternatives weren't the nicest, the toilet cubicles were ridiculously small and when I went over late at night, the automatic light didn't come on so it was in complete darkness.
For a site that's open all year round, I felt they didn't provide the appropriate facilities. This was our first visit to this local to us site, and we were very disappointed.

Liked Plenty of open space, great pitch sizes, ehu near to pitch, great for families in drier months I would imagine. Places to visit locally, Winchester Cathedral, Marwell Zoo, plenty of nice pubs and shops a short drive from site

Disliked Unisex toilets, disabled toilet not checked regularly, toilet paper around base of toilet for my whole stay, no heating in toilets/showers, very cold at this time of year. Very waterlogged so wellies a necessity, just nature, can’t be helped. Road noise quite loud which was a shame as the birds were singing away

Disliked Booked hard standing pitch did not get it go put in a really muddy car park shower block was Really cold and staff was rude will not be going back

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We do, however, need to clarify several inaccuracies.

You were allocated a hard-standing pitch in our overflow car park, which is gravel and the same surface as our standard pitches, and it included a full electric hook-up, exactly as booked. The overflow car park was closed to the public at the time, with no other vehicles parked there.

Unfortunately, access to the gravel pitch area was temporarily unavailable due to a collapsed access road, which was outside of our control. For safety reasons, vehicle access could not be permitted.

Regarding the shower facilities, there is no heating, and this is clearly stated on the Pitchup website prior to booking.

Finally, our staff were not rude. They responded calmly and professionally to what was, at the time, aggressive behaviour and language. Answering firmly in the face of aggression should not be confused with rudeness.

We always aim to provide a safe, fair, and welcoming environment for all guests, and we stand by how this situation was handled.

Liked A fantastic place, kids won't be bored here. There's a soft play area and a bar where you can sit and eat. There's also plenty to do outside, like mini golf and a forest. We've been there three times already and plan to go again.

Disliked Unisex toilet and shower block

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the warm welcome and were happy with the pitch size and location.

We completely understand your comments regarding the unisex toilet and shower facilities — it’s not our preferred setup either. This arrangement is temporary only while our shower blocks are undergoing refurbishment, and facilities will be returned to separate male and female areas as soon as the work is completed.

Thank you for your patience while we make these improvements, and we hope to welcome you back once everything is finished.

Kind regards,

Friendly and helpful always a bonus.

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest. The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes). The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
