  • Family-run campsite on a working farm near Clowne in Derbyshire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Peak District; Chatsworth House 40 minutes
  • Fishing pond and farm shop; direct access to walks and bike rides
Ramblers, fishing folk, families and their dogs – all are welcome at Stanfree Road Farm’s almost-wild campsite near Clowne and Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Set in rolling fields on a small working farm, this family-run site is a handy base for pottering around the Peak District, while keen anglers will probably want to stay behind and cast a line or two on the pond. Simple facilities out on the camping field include a toilet and shower block; there’s no lighting on site, so just make sure to bring along torches for the nighttime. At the handy family-run farm shop, you can pick up fresh eggs for a breakfast fry-up, as well as home-reared, grass-fed Aberdeen Angus beef for the evening barbecue (bring your own barbecue with you, ta). Vehicles are allowed on the meadow for pitching and packing-up purposes only, leaving the campsite safe for kids (and dogs on leads) to play safely. Parking is provided adjacent to the field.

What customers say

A friendly working farm campsite with peaceful, spacious sites & great views. Spotless new showers & loos. Farm shop & butcher are big hits. Fishing, farm animals, and handy location praised. Cosy pods/huts. Minor gripes: some sloping pitches, no on-site water.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Great site really easy to find, nearlly flat site only a slight incline depending on where you pitch, you can pick your spot when you get there. site has brand new toilet and shower block and a big sink to wash your pots. pond is lovely, also benches. and you can leave your car near your tent. only suggestion i would make is maybe a bin near the sink area to dispose of leftovers etc.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Space available, toilet & shower availability.

Disliked There are a few people who live on the site in caravans and motor homes and the noise from them during the night is ridiculous. On the first night we had to ask at 23:40pm for the music to be turned off. On the second night music was still playing until 1am. The noise still continued until around 2am. The site rules are that noise is kept to a minimum from 10pm, and the people camping stuck to that, but unfortunately those living on there don't. With or without children it is unfair when people want to sleep and are in tents which block out virtually no volume/sound. We had a lovely time during the daytime hours, but unfortunately due to noise from those living on the site would not stay again or recommend to others.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely working farm. Toilets and shower block new and kept clean. Welcoming owners. Even got to see the llamas and mini goats!

Disliked Slightly sloping field. Not totally clear where to get drinking water from. Neither of these were big issues.

Local attractions

For active family days out in the fresh air, Clowne Branchline Greenway (15 minutes by bike) promises gentle rides along a former railway line. It links into the multi-use Archaeological Way, which passes old collieries on its way to the gorge and museum at Creswell Crags (both half an hour). There are more adventures to be had in the Peak District National Park (half an hour’s drive), like hiking along the banks of the River Derwent or maybe testing yourselves on a section of the Pennine Way from Edale (an hour). If you’d like to tick a few stately piles off your to-see list, the spectacular Chatsworth House (40 minutes) is open for tours of its sumptuous apartments and scenic walks through landscaped grounds. Nearby is majestic Hardwick Hall (20 minutes), where you can admire Elizabethan architecture at its best, while at hillside Bolsover Castle (10 minutes) there is a circular rampart walk with views over the Vale of Scarsdale. Still not had your fill of history? Head to Chesterfield (20 minutes) to marvel at the twisted steeple on the Crooked Spire church.
