Families seeking a beachside stay are in for a tiptop time at RCN Vakantiepark Toppershoedje, on the coast of Zuid Holland 10 minutes’ drive from Ouddorp town centre. For starters, the pitches here are pleasingly spacious, so you’ve plenty of scope for laying out all your kit just as you wish it. This place used to be an orchard and, although fruit-free now, lots of trees remain to provide shaded spots and lots of cosy clearings with just a handful of families in each section. Cunningly, most of these sections are centred around a little play area – a handy solution for those awkward moments when the kids are still bursting with energy but the parentals need to get the barbie going (or are gasping for a sit-down and a glass of something cooling). That’s of course assuming that you’ve managed to retrieve them from proceedings at the kids’ club; between crafts, games and dancing, they may well have filled much of the day for themselves. The cherry on the holiday cake, though, lies just beyond: a short scramble across the dunes (or a leisurely stroll along the path, whichever you prefer) takes you to the beach – the widest in the entire land. Eats are on offer all day at the site’s restaurant and snack bar; there's a croissanterie with fresh pastries every day, and barbecues are allowed on site.

This being the Netherlands, it’s a great place to get out on your bike. Cycle through bulb fields and past polders to take in the rural scenery, or make the half-hour trip to Stellendam to wander around the traditional fishing harbour and pick up the catch of the day for your dinner. Another bike-friendly destination is Kwade Hoek nature reserve, or you could take the 25-minute ride to the RTM Museum, which has a cracking collection of old diesel and steam locomotives. You can also take a ride on the old tram out to Brouwersdam on certain days (check ahead for dates). If going to the beach has left you itching to get out on the water, you can hire windsurf kit by the site or sign up for surf lessons at the surf school 10 minutes away by bike. There’s paddleboarding down here too, or you could cycle down to Brouwersdam, half an hour away, for kitesurfing or land yachting.
