Phobic about packing? Terminally disorganised? Or frankly just can’t face the faff of finding all your kit? Turn your sights to Juliette Tentvakanties at Camping de Kienehoef, where smart and spacious rental tents are ready and waiting for guests to arrive, dump minimal luggage and get going on the good times. The Noord-Brabant site is sizeable and well situated, with woods and fields all around, and an easy 10 minutes’ bike ride from the amenities of Sint-Oedenrode. Cars are confined to the car park rather than careering around the site, so there should be plenty of space for small sorts to play safely. Arrive on a warm day and it’s likely the kids (and you) will start by gravitating towards the open-air swimming pool or the lake, where there’s a little beach area for sandcastle construction and cool water for swimming, paddling a boat or lazing about on a lilo. Among the other facilities are a beach volleyball court, a multisports field with football goals, table tennis and a large play area with slides, swings, a sand pit and a giant jumping pillow. Kids’ activities run through the summer. There’s a family-friendly restaurant and bar here for snacks and meals; a well-equipped kitchen is in each tent if you’d rather do DIY dinner.

If you need to wrangle the kids away from the site’s play facilities (excellent though they are), you’d do well to mention some of the antics they could be getting up to at local attractions. If they’re pre-teens, perhaps the carnival-themed rides at Dippiedoe amusement park (20 minutes’ drive) will pique their interest... or maybe they’d rather go in search of beasts both big and small at Dierenrijk animal park (half an hour) or Beekse Bergen Safari Park (40 minutes). Both small sorts and more mature folk are likely to have some fun scrambling about in the sand dunes of Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park (40 minutes). A little closer to home are the sizeable Kienehoef Regional Park (five minutes’ walk), where you can paddle boats across the ponds or try your luck with a fishing rod, and the Sint-Oedenrode golf course (10 minutes’ walk). Arty types will be well served around these parts too: follow in the footsteps of one of the world’s most famed painters (and see his letters, his sketches and the places that inspired him…) at Van Gogh Village Neunen (25 minutes’ drive), or take a half-hour drive to either Eindhoven or ’s-Hertogenbosch for museum days.
