Camping Le Montourey

If variety is very much on the wishlist for your Var vacation, then it’s likely Camping Le Mountourey will do you very nicely indeed, merci. From this family holiday park in the outskirts of Fréjus it’s a breezy 15-minute drive to the town’s ancient centre and beaches, and the surrounding area is packed with all manner of seaside antics, animal parks, theme parks, golf courses and rural rambles. And all that has to be factored in on top of the amount of stuff there is to do on site… the all-inclusive setup here is likely to demand many an hour spent at the outdoor pool (with speedy waterslides for those in search of high-adrenaline thrills), the spa area, the paddling pool and the bouncy castle, plus games of pétanque, table tennis, volleyball and tennis. Come along in high season and you’ll also have kids’ club activities and family evening ents on hand too. Time for a sit down? There should be plenty of quiet shaded corners around for naps, picnics or a game of cards among the well-maintained grounds, which are populated with Italian poplar trees (in a nod to the area’s Roman heritage). Or you could always grab a table at the bar for drinks and meals (and cheering on your team when there’s a match on the big screen). Cooking for yourself? There are shared barbecue areas to help with such things, and supplies can be picked up at the on-site mini market or the shops in Fréjus.

First stop: Fréjus (15 minutes’ drive). It’s famed for its beaches but it’s also well worth taking a stroll through the town centre to see the cathedral, the town hall and the pretty pastel-hued houses around the port area. Add in extra time if you fancy the rides at Luna Park theme park or meeting the beasts at Fréjus zoo. Beyond that, this is a handy spot for getting out to see a bit more of the Côte d’Azur: for equal amounts of beach time and people-spotting it’s a 45-minute drive to Cannes or an hour to Saint-Tropez. For a quieter corner along the way, aim for Cap Dramont (half an hour). Swap the blues of the Mediterranean for the greens of the golf course at Roquebrune Golf Resort (20 minutes), or head inland for a hike or mountain bike ride between the cork oak trees and umbrella pines of the Plaine des Maures nature reserve (about an hour).
