Camping Le Montourey

First stop: Fréjus (15 minutes’ drive). It’s famed for its beaches but it’s also well worth taking a stroll through the town centre to see the cathedral, the town hall and the pretty pastel-hued houses around the port area. Add in extra time if you fancy the rides at Luna Park theme park or meeting the beasts at Fréjus zoo. Beyond that, this is a handy spot for getting out to see a bit more of the Côte d’Azur: for equal amounts of beach time and people-spotting it’s a 45-minute drive to Cannes or an hour to Saint-Tropez. For a quieter corner along the way, aim for Cap Dramont (half an hour). Swap the blues of the Mediterranean for the greens of the golf course at Roquebrune Golf Resort (20 minutes), or head inland for a hike or mountain bike ride between the cork oak trees and umbrella pines of the Plaine des Maures nature reserve (about an hour).
