Juliette Tentvakanties at Camping Les Trois Cantons

Run by Dutch company Juliette Tentvakanties, Camping Les Trois Cantons sits in a relatively little-visited corner of south western France, the Tarn-et-Garonne department. You’ll be staying in large safari tents with a well-equipped kitchenette (gas stove and fridge freezer), where you can whip up family meals to savour al fresco, on the covered decking area out front. You can source all your ingredients from the traditional bakeries, butcher’s shops and supermarkets in the small towns of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Septfonds and Caylus (all about 10 minutes’ drive), where there is also no shortage of brasseries, crêperies and pizza places. (There’s also a restaurant – with tabletop grills – on site.) After eating, you might want to draw straws to see who gets to occupy the hammock for an afternoon nap… But it’s not all about chilling – on your hammock or by the side of the pool – here. Indeed, this is a spot for active guests, with an outdoor sports company on site running excursions, whether guiding you along the via ferrata at Roc d’Anglars (15 minutes) or taking you white-water rafting through the Gorges de l’Aveyron (35 minutes). Other activities include abseiling, paragliding and caving. If you’re not into extreme sports, there are lots of hiking and cycling trails in the area, whether in Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park (half an hour) or at the Belvedere du Cirque de Bone (10 minutes). The area around the Belvedere is dotted with dolmens and megalithic ruins. Back at the site, while the children expend the last of their energy in the playground or the kids’ club, you can shower and get ready to join the other guests at the evening entertainments, which usually cover things like bingo and dancing.

On a hot day, the vegetation-lined trails of the Jardin des Paradis (40 minutes’ drive), in the small town of Cordes-sur-Ciel, are a great spot for a stroll. Swing by the lotus ponds inhabited by frogs and dragonflies, admire the vast insect hotels and check out the garden’s collection of pomegranate trees. Renowned for its vineyards, Cahors (50 minutes) has developed in a bend on the Lot river. Climb up to the Point de vue du Mont Saint Cyr first, to admire its unusual geography, then cross Pont Valentré, a fortified medieval bridge, to access the town centre, with the centuries-old Cathédrale Saint-Etienne. Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park is home to places like Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (55 minutes), a medieval village clinging to a cliffside along the Lot river, with half-timbered houses and a thriving artists’ community. The underground cave at Pech Merle (one hour) is decorated with prehistoric drawings.
