Keen on diverting stays with a focus on nature? Find your way to Les Roulottes du Clos d’Aventure, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Toulon-Sur-Arroux in the Saône et Loire department of Burgundy. In the grounds of the Diverti’Parc outdoor nature park, the site has plenty to keep guests of all ages and tastes entertained. Active kids have climbing and fitness courses to explore, a zipline to zip along and pedal karts to zoom around in, while those who prefer to spend leisurely days wandering among nature can visit the cows (36 separate breeds from all over the world) or swan around the botanical garden. Family times are a cinch too: race each other to the centre of mazes made of stone, crops and flowers, challenge each other with treasure hunts, come together for a game of 22-person table football, or perfect swings on the miniature golf course. Those looking for a more peaceful experience can rent some board games – like checkers, dominos or connect-four – for a quiet afternoon back at base. Eats are sorted with trips to the nearest supermarket, about five minutes’ stroll away, or saunters as far as the on-site country grill. Picnic tables dotted around the site can be filled by ordering picnic baskets from the grill, and breakfast is delivered to pitches in the mornings.

Those whose French getaways hinge on seeing a château or two will be well served hereabouts. The site’s half an hour’s drive from the stunning Château de la Verrerie (a 15th-century castle where opting for the theatrical tour is a must), and within 45 minutes of tours and wine tastings at Château de Couches and garden explores at Château de Drée. It’s also within an hour of tours at the privately owned Château de Rully (which also has wine tastings), the spectacular moated Château de Cormatin and its 10-hectare gardens, and the largest Renaissance-style château in southern Burgundy, Château de Sully, with its park, garden, boutique and tearoom. That’s far from the only history nearby either. The site’s 40 minutes from the Gaulish fortified city of Bibracte – an ancient hillfort where guests can learn the history of Vercingetorix’s fights against Caesar – and from the Roman arena, ruined temple, Pyramid of Couhard and museum dotted around the narrow medieval streets of Autun. Hunger building after all this exploring? The weekly markets in Autun may just satisfy… Prefer to stick to more nature-filled days? It’s a 20-minute car journey to the edge of Morvan Regional Nature Park, where hikes, bikes and forest trails aplenty are waiting to be undertaken, and a little under an hour from Arboretum de Pézanin.
