Dithering about what should be top of your list when it comes to deciding where you should spend your precious holiday time? Beach? Open space and valley views? Forest walks? Easy access to townie amenities? Such dilemmas are easily sorted if you roll your way to Les Roulottes et Cabanes du Livradois, where you can have the lot. There’s a pleasingly generous five hectares of space to relax in at this Auvergne estate, with views over a stream and over to the valley beyond. Guests can stroll straight out onto the woodland paths of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park or amble down to the lake for swims (supervised in summer), fishing, pedal boating or sprawling on the sandy beach for a spot of sun-soaking. Fab views can be had all around at this peaceful place: settle down with a glass of something on your deck or wander over to the restaurant terrace for local dishes and woodfired pizzas among the greenery (there's also a cosy indoor room for days when the weather doesn’t lend itself to such activity, or you can gather a group in the kota grill hut). Such serene surrounds may fool you into thinking that you're stranded far from civilisation, but that's not the case: it's an easy 15-minute stroll (or an even easier couple of minutes in the car) to the little town of Cunlhat for a supermarket and food shops; mighty handy for stocking up on supplies of snacks and drinks for sunset aperitif hour...

Setting out on foot, saddling up on horseback, screaming along a zipline – there are so many ways to get active in the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park. Walking and mountain bike trails are all around, and there’s a stable 15 minutes' drive away for folk who’d like to hoof around on horseback. If you've ever fancied following the birds up into the branches, wing over to the canopy trails at Forêt Aventure five minutes’ drive away; there are special courses for intrepid small sorts as well as the grownups. Feet planted safely back at ground level, wander into Cunlhat for tennis courts, miniature golf and a golf course. Elsewhere in the area, take in castle visits at the hilltop ruins of Château de Mauzun (20 minutes' drive) or the elegant Château d’Aulteribe (half an hour), or glide gracefully through the countryside on a scenic train ride from Ambert (25 minutes). It's also worth making the half-hour drive for a potter around the medieval streets of Billom; if you’re a fan of the ‘stinking rose', time your visit to coincide with the town's August lively garlic fair.
