Tips to save money this bank holiday and summer

Staying in the UK this bank holiday weekend or summer? Think you can't afford to get away? Think again....

Accommodation

Search our bookable parks or save up to 50% this bank holiday by browsing our last-minute special offers from holiday parks. Alternatively, use our search to find a location and we'll show you the parks with availability at the top of the listings.

Getting There

If you're driving, follow these handy tips from the AA to save money on fuel. It's also worthwhile making sure you avoid the traffic and accident hotspots this weekend. Take a look at traffic news from the AA.

If you're not driving, there's still time to save money on train and coach fares. Check out these tips from moneysavingexpert to help you get the best last minute deals out there.

Eating

If you're just away for the weekend, you should be able to take enough food with you to last! If you have a coolbox and a cooking stove, buy decent quality meat and freeze it the night before, along with some pre-sliced bread and your ice boxes. Don't pack it until the last minute.

Pack dry pulses that are quick to cook- couscous or lentils are excellent camping or caravanning fodder!

If you're going away in a group, buy all your food together as this will save pennies in the supermarket. Look for special deals but don't compromise on 'best before' dates. Buy a big bottle of water that you can refill once you get onsite.

Drinking

Plan your trip so that you don't have to hit the local boozer for a night out. Pack a few candles, a radio and a blanket to get the atmosphere right and don't forget the corkscrew. (Just in case you do forget it, check out this video.) Why not take along some board games or cards or, if you're into your astronomy, pack a pair of binoculars - you'll be amazed how much you can see with a fairly decent pair once you're away from city lights.

Activities

If you've used our campsite and caravan site search, then you'll be able to find out if there are any special holiday events near you. Visit any listing page to see nearby events coming up.

If you're camping near a city, there will almost certainly be some free events you can enjoy. Listings on Pitchup.com show nearby events, or have a google for the city in question.

If you're out in the countryside then find out where the local town or village Tourist Information point is and find out if there's anything going on while you're there. Or, if you'd rather head off on your own adventure, why not buy a local walks book before you go, or just nab a local and ask them once you're there!

Borrow

If you don't have all the kit you need to go camping or caravanning, ask your family or friends if you can borrow some of theirs. If they've used it already this year, you could incentivise your request by promising to give it a really good clean when you get back.

While you're away

An easy way to recuperate some of the cost of your trip is to rent your car parking space while you're away. Sign up here.
