Set yourself here for a serene sojourn among the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, right next to the waters of the wild Mouillé Marsh in the very well-appointed village of La Garette, and less than an hour’s drive from the coastal resort of La Rochelle. Set across 1.5 hectares, this pleasant place is an excellent starting point for walks, bike rides and tours of the wetlands by boat and canoe: right nearby there’s a boat rental centre should you fancy chauffeuring yourself along the waterways, and for other activities in the immediate vicinity there’s a shooting range, an equestrian centre and a public swimming pool. As this area is networked by a sprawling natural water system, you’d also be right in guessing that it’s also a prime place for anglers: the waters here are indeed a fishing fan’s paradise, filled with the likes of eels, black bass, roach, tench, bream, pike and perch. When you’ve settled into your new (temporary) home, talk to the friendly team there about all the activities you can do around the local area: the site has partnered with various companies to give guests preferential rates on stuff like boat trips, bike rentals and sampling regional gastronomy – the nearest bike rental service lies 50 metres from the site, and the nearest restaurant a mere 10 metres. Added to the park in 2017, the grocery store sells fresh regional produce and home-baked goods; for anything beyond, local shops and supermarkets are within easy reach.

Camping l'ilot du Chail is very well placed for weeks' worth of active and relaxed days: right next to the site are the mini canals of the Mouillé Marsh, perfect for canoe paddles, boat trips and fishing expeditions, and there are lots of lovely waterside walks to be had almost direct from the site. Also in La Garette is a public pool, an equestrian centre and a shooting range. Bike rides are also a splendid thing to do here – rent yourself two wheels from a company nearby to tour the little maraichin villages of La Garette, Coulon, Amuré, Le Vanneau-Ireleau, Saint-Georges-de-Rex, Arçais and Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud. Elsewhere, Les Oiseaux Ornithological Park, 20 minutes’ drive away, is a pleasant spot for birdwatching by boat: this eight-hectare park is home to more than 70 species of bird, and once you’ve ticked them all off you can reward yourself with a luncheon of local produce at one of the park’s picnic areas. If you fancy a day by the sea, then that’s very achievable from here too: the lively coastal city of La Rochelle is less than an hour’s drive away, and from here you can hop on boat trips out to the Île de Ré, spree around the shops or go for a swim in the sea.
