Get ready to get active. You’re at Domaine d’Arnauteille, set on a verdant 115-hectare private estate deep in hilly, forested Aude countryside. With mountain views on all sides – you can see the Corbières Massif, the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees – staying here also puts you close to the rural village of Montclar (five minutes’ drive) and historic Carcassonne (half an hour). Actually, there’s so much to do around the site, you may never get to Carcassonne. Or the Pyrenees. By day, life revolves around the amphitheatre-styled water park with mountain views, indoor and outdoor pools, water chutes and a paddling pool for youngsters. Teens and parents can laze on the sundeck or take their turn in spas baths and massage jets. To up the activity ante, locally you can go hiking, mountain biking or horse riding through vineyards, take to the Aude river for a spot of white-water rafting… the list goes on. And it’s not just sporty types who will have a ball here. Entertainment is laid on for the kids, who get to make puppets and go on treasure hunts. There’s a library, a TV room, a games room… Adults soon get into the holiday spirit too, thanks to the bar in the vaulted cellars and a restaurant with a shaded terrace. So… pretty much everything you need for family downtime is on tap. No need to fret about running out of supplies either; simply stock up on fruits, vegetables and wine at the site’s essentials shop, and pick up fresh pastries and baguettes every morning.

Bitte verständigen Sie den Campingplatz mithilfe der Kontaktdaten auf der Buchungsbestätigung, wenn Sie auf dem Weg sind und später ankommen werden. Positiv: Very friendly and helpful staff who gave us a really warm welcome. The campsite is brilliant with excellent pitches. All facilities were spotlessly clean and maintained daily. The pool area, both indoor and outdoor, is as good as any 5 star hotel and is also very suitable for children. The site is set in the countryside well away from traffic noise etc. Small shop onsite which ordered fresh bread etc and sold a beautiful local wine at reasonable cost.

Negativ: Everything was perfect except the waste system was at the reception area should be at the exit area for campervans when leaving as one way system

Mobilheim 2 Schlafzimmer (4 Personen, überdachter Balkon)

Positiv: The pool area

Negativ: No TV 📺 and the bar was not open this is why we booked to watch the rugby! The restaurant was open but only until 21:30 the games started at 21:00. The restaurant service and food was terrible.

For the lack of television for the broadcast of the matches, we are sorry for the confusion but exceptionally for the period of the rugby world cup, we broadcast the matches at the restaurant. Erdiger Stellplatz voll ausgestattet (XL)

Positiv: Excellent reception staff, really helpful, no question or request was too much trouble. The toilets and swimming pools areas were in the style of ancient Rome and the setting of the campsite is indeed spectacular, surrounded by vineyards around 3km from the main road. Pitch sizes are good and the WiFi was good. Water and electric also proved reliable too. Facilities in general are fantastic. Near to Carcassonne and other places to visit.

Negativ: Some short but steep hills to walk up from reception / pool / restaurant & bar

Negativ: Wi-fi does NOT work. We booked a style of pitch on pitch up but not available on arrival so charged extra - probably should not have agreed to pay. Quite steep in places…

If you manage to drag the family away from the pool complex, Carcassonne (half an hour’s drive) should be high on your list of potential visits. Wrapped in medieval walls, this little town is almost Disney-esque in its gorgeousness: book a guided tour of the turreted Château Comtal, visit the gothic Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, and see some pretty repulsive torture implements in the Museum of the Inquisition. Book a barge trip down the Canal du Midi, take a family bike ride along its banks or head to Lac de la Cavayère (both half an hour) for swims in clear water and rounds of mini-golf. For more adrenaline-filled, water-based adventures, go whitewater rafting down the steep-sided Pierre Lys gorges (50 minutes). If you’d care to dip into the region’s history, visit the four clifftop Cathar castles at Châteaux de Lastours (40 minutes) to stroll ruined courtyards, climb spiral staircases up towers with arrow slits in the walls, and see murder holes where prisoners once starved to death.
