A splendiferous site setting awaits guests here at Acorn Cottage in Ardleigh, Essex, a cosy one-off lodge that’s been converted to accommodate four and lies just under two miles from the superly handsome old village of Dedham in properly paintworthy Constable Country. Fishing and sailing at Ardleigh Reservoir, seaside days at Clacton and Southend and town-based trips to Ipswich and Colchester are all within easy reach from here – as are walks, horse rides and pedal-based adventures among some pretty spectacular scenery. At the front of the lodge is a roomy decked terrace with a little table and chairs for when you want to dine or sip drinks on clement days as you survey your smashing countryside surrounds, and as the accommodation here stands proudly alone among the owner’s land, you’ll be able to secure your deserving self some proper peace and quiet around here. The lodge is splendidly light and airy and decked with comfy modern furniture; it’s all open plan, with a kitchen area kitted out with fridge, oven, hob, kettle and toaster in a main living area that’s well set up for soirées around the dinner table or relaxed evenings in front of the tele. The sofa bed here accommodates two extra guests, and a plush double awaits your sleepy head in the lodge’s sole bedroom, with a chest of drawers and wardrobe space for you to can sow away all your holiday garb; also splendidly, right off the bedroom is an en-suite shower room. Those of a horsey persuasion can trot up to the site with their four-legged companion should they fancy having a highly scenic hack along the local bridle paths – just let the site know when you book and they’ll make sure to prime the paddocks and stables ready for your arrival (for an additional charge) – or otherwise there are plenty of walking paths around, so be sure to bring some comfy treads to tramp around in. Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome and – to keep things nice and serene for all the other animalfolk on site (dogs, horses, chickens and two cats) – should be kept on a lead a all times. Foodwise, barbecues are allowed, but for when you fancy a tasty treat or pub garden pint off site, tea rooms, pubs, village stores and several fine restaurants are around Ardleigh, Dedham and Manningtree, and the site lies right near some excellent transport links too: you’re a mere five minutes from the A12 at Lawford, and a bus stop lies almost adjacent to the house on the A137. Also within easy reach is Manningtree with a mainline route to London Stratford, as well as to Colchester, Ipswich and beyond.

Have a hike, a hack or a pedal around Dedham and Dedham Vale – aka Constable Country – and you’ll very soon see why he was inspired to paint so many pictures of it. National Trust-owned Flatford Mill is also well worth a trip out to: take a look around the 18th-century mill and its adjoining cottage, and if you’re feeling energetic, you can also follow it up with the four-mile guided ramble that runs from here. Fishing fans can head over to the 120-acre Ardleigh Reservoir to haul themselves good-sized common and mirror carp weighing up to 40lb, pike to over 25lb and a mix of other fishy specimens. Also at the reservoir is Ardleigh Sailing Club if you fancy hopping aboard a water-worthy vessel and taking to the waves. For a stint at the seaside, Clacton-on-Sea is about half an hour's drive away, or the cliff railway and lengthy pier of Southend-on-Sea are an hour down the road. Urban explorers can head over to Colchester, six miles from base, to wander around Castle Park and castle, or half an hour away in Ipswich you can hang out by the marina. For something active there instead, a swoosh down the town’s dry ski slope is highly recommended.
