With the landscapes of the North York Moors National Park all around and the coastline only about 10 minutes’ drive away, this is a nifty location for a North Yorkshire outdoor break. Clover Hill Farm is a family-run site in the hamlet of Scaling, up at the northern end of the national park about 20 minutes’ drive from Whitby. That location means there are plenty of options around for activities and days out, with hiking/cycle trails galore nearby, plus outings to beaches and seaside towns. And you won’t have to travel far to get your scenery/activity fix, as a 15-minute walk gets you to the waterfall at Roxby Mill. Alternatively, a five-minute stroll takes you to Scaling Reservoir for fishing, walks and watersports (or a game of crazy golf and a good meal at the waterside pub). Tailoring your break to your style is easy here – you can keep things simple or boost your break with various extras like barbecue hire, prosecco buckets and birthday banners. On arrival you can also sort things like local barbecue meat packs and outdoor games hire (giant Jenga, supersized Twister, that sort of thing…) Guest facilities centre around a shepherd’s hut washroom (with hot showers and flushing toilets) and a well-equipped kitchen hut with a mini oven, double hob, microwave, fridges and various pots, pans and utensils. Outside, there’s a large mowed area for games or for groups to gather. The folk that own this site are passionate about the environment, so they’ve made a concerted effort to plant new trees and hedging to create wildlife corridors and enhance the site’s biodiversity. Owl and bat boxes on site mean you may well see and/or hear these species at some point during your stay.

Syntes om Best campsite I have ever stopped of nice size kitchen with everything you need in there and a Fridge to use. Toilets where nice and fresh. Can hire fit pit or bbq and a great little tuck shop to grab some snacks and coffee from.

Syntes om Lovely, small, quiet campsite. Beautifully clean showers with excellent hot water pressure and spacious cubicles, unlike so many campsite showers these have adjustable height, stay on once turned on and have a fitted door so the floor and your towel don't get wet. Really clean toilets. Love the honesty box shop, good range of products available at a good price. Pitches are massive and nicely separated with wild areas for a nice amount of privacy. Lovely large grassed area in the centre for children to play on. I cannot recommend this campsite highly enough. We stayed as a family with children aged 14, 12, 7, 5 and 10 months and it was absolutely perfect for us. Communal camping kitchen is well equipped and also very clean. We were not able to have fires due to the drought conditions and our pre-booked fire pit was proactively refunded with apologies which really was good of the owners.

I was worried about moving our stuff from the car to the pitch but the wheelbarrows supplied are absolutely magnificent and in a range of sizes, my 5 year old was delighted to be able to push stuff about. The wilding of the campsite is also lovely we had a friendly hedgehog who snuffled about our pitch!

Lovely location between Saltburn which was a beautiful old fashioned seaside town and Whitby.

Syntes om Lovely little campsite, facilities are excellent and match the size of the campsite nicely. Good amount of space between pitches, with growing natural barriers, which will add more privacy as they grow.

Good open space in the middle for play. Loved the location and the effort that has gone into the grounds, and signposting for nature lovers. The coffee shop is a lovely touch.

Syntes ikke om Could do with more/a bigger bin, or signposting to where the bigger bins were. It seemed some people weren’t aware of where these were. Was also unclear if the big black bin was recycling or just general waste.

Syntes om Everything. The location was perfect for a trip into Whitby. The facilities at the camp site were amazing and far exceeded what I was expecting. The whole site was amazing I especially liked how the pitches were set up giving you your own little space. I could go on all day about how we loved Clover Hill we will 100% be making another visit and I couldn’t recommend it more.

There’s a whole lot of choice around here when it comes to walks and bike rides – and as the farm is on a public right of way, you can get started straight from the gate. Some of the top spots nearby include Blakey Ridge (20 minutes’ drive), Roseberry Topping (25 minutes) and the Hole of Horcum (half an hour). Not up for the exercise? Ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Goathland (25 minutes). The national park stretches all the way to the coast, taking in seaside towns like Runswick Bay (10 minutes), Staithes (15 minutes) and Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour). Saltburn-by-the-Sea (20 minutes) is another popular spot, with a lovely beach, a pier and a funicular railway to ride. The highlight for many, though, is a trip to Whitby (20 minutes), where you can stroll through the Old Town, climb the famed 199 Steps and visit the abbey, as well as spending time on the beach.
