  • Family-run site at Scaling in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Whitby; 25 minutes to Roseberry Topping
  • Well-equipped kitchen hut on site; barbecues and outdoor games to hire
With the landscapes of the North York Moors National Park all around and the coastline only about 10 minutes’ drive away, this is a nifty location for a North Yorkshire outdoor break. Clover Hill Farm is a family-run site in the hamlet of Scaling, up at the northern end of the national park about 20 minutes’ drive from Whitby. That location means there are plenty of options around for activities and days out, with hiking/cycle trails galore nearby, plus outings to beaches and seaside towns. And you won’t have to travel far to get your scenery/activity fix, as a 15-minute walk gets you to the waterfall at Roxby Mill. Alternatively, a five-minute stroll takes you to Scaling Reservoir for fishing, walks and watersports (or a game of crazy golf and a good meal at the waterside pub). Tailoring your break to your style is easy here – you can keep things simple or boost your break with various extras like barbecue hire, prosecco buckets and birthday banners. On arrival you can also sort things like local barbecue meat packs and outdoor games hire (giant Jenga, supersized Twister, that sort of thing…) Guest facilities centre around a shepherd’s hut washroom (with hot showers and flushing toilets) and a well-equipped kitchen hut with a mini oven, double hob, microwave, fridges and various pots, pans and utensils. Outside, there’s a large mowed area for games or for groups to gather. The folk that own this site are passionate about the environment, so they’ve made a concerted effort to plant new trees and hedging to create wildlife corridors and enhance the site’s biodiversity. Owl and bat boxes on site mean you may well see and/or hear these species at some point during your stay.

Liked Beautiful campsite and Sarah was really helpful. We loved how private the pitches were. It felt so peaceful. Toilets & showers were always clean and plenty of hot water. The kitchen area was really handy. Great location for visiting surrounding areas such as Runswick Bay, Staithes, Whitby etc

Liked Beautiful site. Received a text in the morning advising where to park, we can choose our pitch and that barrows are available to move items from car to pitch. Facilities were amazing with communal washing-up, cooking, kettle and fridge freezers. Toilet/showers were modern and very clean. The entire visit was self-service which was fine for us. There is an honesty store with food, drink and camping essentials available. I saw most (if not all) pitches had at least one stone ring fire pit and barbeques/tripods were available too. Pitches were relatively private with natural growth bordering them. Felt confident leaving our tent set up whilst we took a visit to Runswick bay just 10-15 mins drive. Would definitely visit again.

Liked We loved the site, it was scenic and peaceful. Great onsite amenities. Kitchen was great, toilet and shower facilities were great and all kept super clean. The cute onsite honesty shop was a great addition for little extras and souvenirs. Wheel barrows provided to take belongings to the camping area was really good for keeping cars away from tents and the ground in good condition.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked It’s a lovely and spacious site with clean facilities and lovely little touches. The owners were very friendly and helpful - it felt like a true family run site. It felt like they’d thought of everything!

Disliked Obviously not their fault, but it’s a very windy site! Not having cars at the pitches is great for the site feeling safe for kids, but the downside is having to move everything by wheelbarrow from the car. It’s a workable solution but a bit of a faff, especially when trying to keep little ones in check.

Local attractions

There’s a whole lot of choice around here when it comes to walks and bike rides – and as the farm is on a public right of way, you can get started straight from the gate. Some of the top spots nearby include Blakey Ridge (20 minutes’ drive), Roseberry Topping (25 minutes) and the Hole of Horcum (half an hour). Not up for the exercise? Ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Goathland (25 minutes). The national park stretches all the way to the coast, taking in seaside towns like Runswick Bay (10 minutes), Staithes (15 minutes) and Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour). Saltburn-by-the-Sea (20 minutes) is another popular spot, with a lovely beach, a pier and a funicular railway to ride. The highlight for many, though, is a trip to Whitby (20 minutes), where you can stroll through the Old Town, climb the famed 199 Steps and visit the abbey, as well as spending time on the beach.
