Getting away from it all – ah, bliss. There are plenty of big, busy campsites and parks that are ideal for a packed family holiday, but these aren’t always the first choice when you just want to relax somewhere quiet. Remote camping and caravanning gives you the peace and quiet of being off the beaten track, alongside the convenience of being on a proper campsite with facilities, security, and other humans once (or if) you’re feeling sociable. Here’s our pick of five remote camping sites around the country.

Beeches Farm, Monmouthshire

It’s a fairly safe bet that a farm site will give you what you want in the remote location stakes, but Beeches Farm adds in some top scenery too, with views across the Wye Valley and with the farm surrounded by the ancient Forest of Dean. Have a walk out to the ruins of Tintern Abbey or along Offa’s Dyke, before coming back to build a campfire in the farm's stone circle firepits. Outlandish Holidays, Cornwall

This one also comes with scenery as standard: these refurbished gypsy wagons are set on a teeny site on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with views over Falmouth Bay. The caravans come with double bed and bedding provided, and start from £75 a night.

Lee Wick Farm Cottages and Camping, Essex

We’re seeing a theme with farm sites here – and teeny ones, with Lee Wick also listed in our ‘Tiny’ section with less than ten pitches. But pitching up here is in the Mega Pod Glamping Pod, which sleeps up to four and which comes fully equipped with double beds, kitchen and its own loo and shower. The farm leads straight on to the Essex Wildlife Trust Colne Point Nature Reserve for solitary strolls, or you can cast off in peace at Lee Wick’s own fishing reservoir. The glamping pod at Lee Wick starts from £45 a night.

Stanley Villa Farm Camping, Lancashire

Not teeny this time but still small, and you get the best of both worlds at this rural Fylde farm, as it’s just fifteen minutes’ drive from the shows and attractions of Blackpool. Fylde Trout Fishery is on site to land rainbow and brown trout among the trees, with Preston’s Beacon Fell Country Park within a short drive. The accommodation at Stanley Villa Farm comes in heated insulated camping pods, starting from £30 a night.

Keens Cottage Camping, Somerset

Make music under the stars at this remote site on the edge of Wimbleball Lake, in a dark sky reserve and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are music courses available on site for sax, clarinet, brass and flute, covering all levels; the site is also a smallholding and can sell you eggs, bread and milk, with meals available in high season. There are a range of accommodation options at Keens: tent, tourer and motorhome pitches start from £12 a night, with bell tents and tipis from £65 a night sleeping up to four. There’s also a luxury five-berth caravan for hire, starting from £70 a night.
