At 15 minutes’ ride from the meeting of highways 12 and 410 – both super-scenic mountain drives popular with bikers – Infidel Acres is a privately owned, motorcycle-only campground with far-reaching views over sagebrush-covered hills at Cowiche in Washington state. This is a veteran-friendly, wild-camping spot with just a handful of pitches on grass, leaving plenty of room between each tent for your privacy and peace. By day you can ride empty roads, hike canyon trails or chill back at base and admire the views, but be sure to be outside on clear nights – you might get lucky and glimpse the Milky Way glittering in the dark skies above. The small rural community of Cowiche offers up craft breweries, several wineries with tasting rooms and also restaurants to keep you all fuelled up. If you need to stock up on provisions for the next stage of your road trip, head for the stores in Yakima (20 minutes by bike). Any basic maintenance you might need on your bike – old or new – can be provided by Bat City Choppers, run by US Army veterans and former military contractors, and based at the entrance to the campsite

Learn about the history of local Native Americans at Yakima Valley Museum (20 minutes), which also displays an intriguing mix of regional wildlife dioramas, historic carriages and elegant period costumes. If it’s time for a little light refreshment after that cultural interlude, first stop might be the Cowiche Creek Brewing Company (five minutes) to taste craft beers along with burgers, fries and occasional live music. If you’re keen to sample more local fare, head for Treveri Cellars (half an hour) to sample their sparkling rosé and white wines, or try the Cabernet Franc reds at Freehand Cellars (35 minutes). And if you’d like to stockpile some seasonal fruits for your onwards journey, there are numerous kerbside fruit stands within 20 minutes’ ride.
