Tucked away in Albuquerque’s North Valley is a colourfully decorated and minuscule campsite set inside a walled organic garden for total privacy. Mother Bosque Garden has a gorgeous urban setting close to the Rio Grande (The Big River), and the pitches are surrounded by swathes of desert plants, flowers and fruit trees that bloom from spring through to autumn. This is a clean and secure base with room for just a handful of tents (guests in campervans, cars or trucks park and sleep in the parking area), with kids and dogs all warmly welcome. There are sunny corners supplied with tables and chairs in which to congregate over breakfast or a beer after hiking, plenty of shade if you want it and a cool porch to sit in. Facilities include a bathroom with a hot shower; towels, soap and shampoo are all provided. You have free use of a fully stocked kitchen, while there is a small fee for using the laundry room. The pitches are also close to shops (five minutes’ drive), petrol stations (10 minutes) and hiking areas – Rinconada Canyon Trail is 15 minutes away by car.
