Texas, Nevada, Wyoming and… Sweden? If you fancy a taste of the Old West but on the Old Continent, head for this slice of cowboy country in Värmland. A troop of friendly horses (roaming free over 20 acres of land) share the site with human visitors, and little details (think tipis, wagons, and Stetson hats) complete the US theme. Sun Dance Ranch is a top spot for guests who want to be surrounded by nature: Värmland is a peaceful area with oodles of wildlife, and guests can swim, fish or relax under the trees without ever leaving the homestead. Off-site, there are mountain bike trails accessible from the nearby town of Ekshärad (five minutes' drive), and you can also stop off here to stock up here at the local supermarket. Activities-wise, target shooting, quadbiking, canoeing and horse trekking are on offer (in high season, reserve at reception to avoid disappointment). In summer, guests can cool off in the outdoor pool, and there’s a Jacuzzi too (a most pleasing thing to see if you’ve spent a long day in the saddle). Barbecues and campfires are allowed, and a handy washing-up area is available. If you fancy sampling some proper ranch grub, the saloon restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Keep an eye out for the regular live music and open mic nights (swing by the licensed bar to beat stage fright and get into the yee-haw spirit).

Llocs d'interès

The site is situated on the edge of the Klarälven river (the longest in all of Sweden). Fancy messing around in boats? Have a chat with the friendly folk at reception to sort canoeing and rafting opportunities. Stormier waters can be seen at nearby Bratfallet, where there's a 10-metre high waterfall and scenic hiking trail stretching out to 17 kilometres. Keep an eye out for the historic stone bridges as you wander between the trees. Those for whom a holiday just wouldn't be a holiday without a trip to a niche museum or two should be pretty well sorted around here: at Hagfors Railroad Museum (20 minutes' drive) guests can peruse steam engines, rail paraphernalia and all manner of locomotive curiosities. Alternatively, the Monica Zetterlund Museum (also 20 minutes) has exhibits about the life, career and times of the local Swedish songstress. Less niche and rather more classically Swedish is Värmlands Moose Park (15 minutes), where you can take a tour to get up close and personal with the big beasts to give them a stroke and a bit of a feed.

Em va agradar Es waren sehr schöne Tage auf der Sun Dance Ranch. Die Betreiber sind super freundlich und hilfsbereit. Ich hatte leider das falsche Kabel um meinen Camper an den Strom zu hängen, kurz gefragt und das passende ausgeliehen bekommen. Die sanitären Einrichtungen waren sehr sauber, das Wasser zum Duschen wurde sogar sehr heiß (wer es mag) kurz um, die jeweilige Temperatur die einem zusagt kann eingestellt werden. Eine sehr schöne Gegend zum Wandern, für Pferdenarren optimal. Es ist halt eine Ranch, alle dort sind freundlich selbst die beiden Hunde (einer mag sogar gestreichelt werden, bellen tuen sie beide erstmal. Aber es sind ja auch Hunde) Mit dem Wetter hatte ich Glück anfangs warm und sonnig danach leicht bewölkt und ein wenig windig. Einkaufsmöglichkeiten sind in der Nähe vorhanden (mit dem Auto) im nahe liegenden Dorf.
Ich würde die Sun Danc Ranch jederzeit wieder besuchen, dann auch mit dem Rest der Familie. Dieser Urlaub war aber ein reiner Papa Urlaub.
