Splendid simplicity and stunning scenery – that’s the winning combo at Gård Solhag, a small-scale site in a meadow about five minutes’ drive from Ekshärad.
This setting is a spectacular one for those of you who fancy some truly peaceful nature-filled time – the site is on the banks of Lake Grängen, with gorgeous views over the water to the hills and woodlands beyond. There’s access to the water for swimming and fishing, and canoes, motorboats and rowing boats are available to rent.
Bring your boots and bikes as well, because there are gorgeous walking and cycling trails running from the site through the woods and flower-filled meadows all around. Other activities nearby include horse riding and alpaca walking, and there are various attractions to check out, including Värmlands Moose Park.
Fittingly for such a scenic location, this is a very simple site (why add loads of unnecessary distractions when the views are this good?) – in particular you’ll need to note that there are no toilet or shower facilities for guests. Dogs are welcome, as are barbecues – pick up any supplies you need at the small supermarket in Ekshärad.

You may find yourselves simply settling in to gaze out over the lake for several hours – but there’s plenty more scenery to explore, so it’s worth leaving those views behind and heading out from time to time. For walkers, the trails to Brattfallet waterfall (20 minutes’ drive) and through the woods at Vågbackens Motionsområde (25 minutes) are popular options.
For other activities, take your mountain bikes to the winding trail at Skidstadion MTB (half an hour), sign up for horse riding (or even horse swimming) at Our Little Farm Horseback Riding (10 minutes) or canoe the Klarälven river from Ekshärad (five minutes). There’s also the option of taking new woolly friends for a stroll at Vallarnaalpackor (45 minutes) or walking among the Nordic natives at Värmlands Moose Park (10 minutes).
Other outings nearby might take you to Torsby (half an hour) for the Kollsberg Museum and Torsby Fordonsmuseum, or to Hagfors Järnvägsmuseum (25 minutes) to see vintage trains and take a trolley ride through the woods.
