Watersports, surfing and fishing are all available here, at high tide in the natural pool made by the incoming waters tiptop for deep sea fishing. At low tide, fish in the small creeks of the huge sandbank visible with the water's retreat, or clamber over the sands to reach other well-known sands like Bear beach and Mendia beach, or Regolgueru beach among the cliffs.
The beach is surrounded by prehistoric caves and monuments, and within easy reach of the Picos de Europa mountains for hiking, mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, climbing and canoeing. Or you could decide to take things most easy indeed, by bagging a book from the Camping Playa de la Franca library to find your own secluded spot on the beach – since sands, sun and a ripping yarn are possibly the best holiday combo ever.
Although it's so close to such spectacular sands, you should sort significant time on site at Camping Playa de la Franca too, as there's loads to get stuck into at this scenic and well-equipped place. Kids have outdoor films to goggle at, a kids' area and a junior area to play at, and a pool for all ages to splash around in alongside the grownups.
If you're seeking sanctuary indoors on a hot Asturias day, keep your cool with an hour or two in the recreation room, or toddle back to the library for games, board games and another book. Food is no faff here either: the site bar serves tapas, roast chicken and ice cream, and the restaurant dishes up specialities from Asturias including a full school of local fish.
A grocery shop is on site too if you need it, to sort the likes of fruit and veg, bread and pastries, milk and ice.

The famed Picos de Europa mountains 20 kilometres inland from the Spanish coastline span the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León as part of the Cantabrian Mountains. Hiking, mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, climbing, canoeing and kayaking can all be sorted among their peaks, as well as access to some of the world's deepest caves in Torca del Cerro, Sima de la Cornisa, Torca los Rebecos and Pozo del Madejuno.
Even closer, the prehistoric cave of El Pindal is six kilometres from the site, near the town of Pimiango on the Cantrabrian shoreline. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain; if you want to delve deeper into the region's ancient history, the prehistoric rock art centre and museum of Tito Bustillo is about 40 kilometres away at Ribadesella.
