Congrats – if you've landed on this page, you've sniffed out one of northern Spain's most splendidly sandy spots. Villatent at Camping Nautic Almata has fab, family-friendly canvas accommodation on a holiday park that hugs the Mediterranean coast and the inland waters of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature reserve. Tributaries of the Fluvià also run through the site, making this Catalonia spot particularly green and leafy – as well as leaving open the possibility of rocking up by boat (check with site staff if you need to book a berth). The safari tents on offer here are five metres long and comfortably sleep up to five. They're well-equipped and sturdy affairs, each with compact kitchen facilities, a full-sized fridge and proper beds. Toilets and showers are over in the site's well-kept communal blocks, but there's cold water on tap in the kitchen for washing fruit and veg (or for those evenings when you slip into your pyjamas and realise you've forgotten to brush your teeth…). Around the site there's plenty to keep families in the holiday mood, with an outdoor pool, paddling area, bar, restaurant and adults-only beach club where busy mums and dads can catch their breath. Other grownup treats include a jacuzzi and a range of massage therapies, just in case gazing out over the gorgeous Gulf of Roses wasn’t quite soothing enough… There's a food shop on site, but self-catering holidaymakers who want to load up on local snacks should head to the larger supermarket in Sant Pere Pescador (10 minutes' drive).

The site has direct access to a 3.5-kilometre sandy beach (look lively and put down your towel early if you want to bag yourself a spot close to the park entrance). Further afield, the pleasure port of Empuriabrava (20 minutes) has many more coastal locales where you can chill, as well as watersport opportunities like boat and jetski rental. Whizzing around the Gulf of Roses is all very well for those seeking thrills, but when you find yourself after some nature you're best bet is to book onto a boat trip at Cadaqués harbour (40 minutes) – sperm whales, dolphins and other elusive marine mammals all dwell in the wild waters around this headland. Equally impressive (while being plonked firmly on dry land) are architectural landmarks like Montgrí Castle (35 minutes), Sant Ferran castle (30 minutes) and The Dalí Theatre and Museum (30 minutes). Girona (50 minutes), a sizeable medieval city with a cathedral, cinema museum and well-preserved Arab baths, is also worth a gander.
