It way well feel like there really is magic in the air when you’re staying at Fairytale on Velika Planina – this stunning location in the north of Slovenia is just below the peak of Mount Gradišče and has spectacular views out over the surroundings of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The views may be utterly fabulous, but that’s not all that this location has to offer – come along here and you’ll be staying in a gorgeous cosy cottage built in the traditional manner but kitted out with all sorts of modern luxuries. Those facilities include a fully fitted kitchen, a bathroom with a hot shower and a Finnish sauna where you can warm up and soothe any tight muscles you’ve developed during a day exploring the area. Underfloor heating and a log fire should ensure you can stay warm even when you’re not stretched out in the sauna. One of the real bonuses of this location high up on a mountain is the fact that you’ll be able to take in both sunrise and sunset, and the big windows here have been designed so that you can take in those views while curling up by the fire with a coffee if you like. Mind you, on warm summer days you may well be tempted to head out into the fresh air, where outdoor seating is set up to help you soak up the views and the sunshine. Want to share this gorgeous spot with your loved ones? You’ll be able to bring a fair few of them along, as the cottage sleeps up to nine and welcomes well-behaved dogs. A wifi connection is available for sending pics off to those elsewhere too…

The easiest way to get to the cottage is to park at the cable car station and then take the cable car and chairlift to the top of Velika Planina. From the chairlift station it's just a few metres to the cottage.

It’s all about the natural landscapes around here – Velika Planina (which translates as ‘big pasture plateau) is a karstified mountain plateau that’s got stunning mountain views that change throughout the year, with snowy peaks in winter, blankets of saffron flowers in spring and cattle coming out to graze on green meadows in summer. Summer visitors can head out on several scenic footpaths leading off to the authentic herdsmen’s settlements – take a stroll round here and you may be offered a taste of any traditional dishes they’re preparing at the time. A stop at Preskar Museum (25 minutes’ walk) will tell you all about the local cheese, trnič, too. As for natural attractions, see if you can seek out Vetrnica cave, the Luknja natural window and the Dovja Griča cave that’s inspired several local folk tales.

Em va agradar We loved the whole experience, from getting the cable car and chair lift to the accommodation to watching the sunset over the mountains, to cosying up by the fire, stargazing (no light pollution means you can see thousands), the comfy bed, the silence, the herdsman’s breakfast (very large portions!), local hiking routes and the local restaurant. It really was like a fairytale!

No em va agradar Not a dislike but be aware that the cable car undergoes maintenance in September, meaning sometimes there are only 3 per day. Very easy to plan around and the host provides all the information ☺️
