When you’re looking for outdoor adventure in Tūrangi, Waikato, don’t let the Oasis Motel and Caravan Park slip through the net. This two-hectare holiday park is set to a backdrop of the Mount Maunganamu Scenic Reserve, so you’re all good for hiking and cycling in forested hills. You can also go fishing or boating in the Lake Taupō Wetlands – there’s a boat ramp less than five minutes’ stroll from the pitches. In addition, guests have 24-hour access to a number of natural hot mineral pools on the property, as well as boiling mud pools in the Tokaanu Thermal Park (five minutes’ walk). Facilities-wise, there’s lots to look forward to. If you’re going down the self-catering route, you can stock up on essentials in the on-site shop, and make use of the communal kitchen, dining area and barbecues. Not chef material? You have the option of restaurant meals as well. There are TV rooms for downtime, and free hot showers available 24/7. Spacious touring pitches are set on levelled grass, and there’s ample storage for boats too. And if all that isn’t enough to keep you happy, you can meet-and-greet the sheep, goats and alpacas grazing around the holiday park as well.

You don’t have to go far to find something to do. If you need a major stock up on food, the nearest shopping facilities are in Tūrangi. You can also go boating with Tongariro River Rafting (both five minutes’ drive) and coarse fishing at the Tongariro National Trout Centre (10 minutes), or play 18 holes at Tūrangi Golf Club (five minutes). Follow circular hiking trails along the Tongariro River Trail and through Taupahi Reserve Park (both five minutes), go riding in pine woodland from Korohe Horse Treks (10 minutes), or swim off the long beach edging Lake Taupō in the Waiotaka Scenic Reserve (also 10 minutes) too. Look out over snow-capped Mount Ruapehu from the landmark Waituhi Scenic Lookout (25 minutes), or test your fitness on long hikes and cycle rides in stunning Tongariro National Park (half an hour), where many scenes from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ were filmed. If you’re visiting in winter, you are near all the park’s ski resorts too.
