It’s a fine idea to start your local explores on two wheels – if you’ve not brought them along, hire bikes on site to pedal around nearby. If you always find yourself keen to kick off your shoes after a ride, bike over to Blote Voetenpad (10 minutes’ ride) to wander on the barefoot trail through the woods. Or perhaps your woodland rides will entice you to get up into the trees? If so, head to Klimbos Brabantse Wal (10 minutes by bike) to take on the high ropes course and ziplines. If you’d rather keep your rural outings at ground level, the Minnebeek Groenhuysen kids’ farm (15 minutes’ drive) is a good bet. To mix up your country days with some town time, head into the centre of Bergen op Zoom (10 minutes’ drive/15 by bike) to see the history museum in a 15th-century palace, or aim beyond to Tholen (15 minutes’ drive/45 by bike), where there’s a windmill and medieval city walls to wander around. Antwerp, 45 minutes’ drive away across the Belgian border, is easily doable too – there are excellent museums here dedicated to art, fashion and history, plus some stunning architecture.
