Keeping energetic tiddlers busy at all times while away from home can be something of a challenge – but the team at North Brabant’s Vodatent at Camping Uit en Thuis are quietly confident that they’re up to that challenge. Much effort has gone in to sorting the facilities at this family site, 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Bergen op Zoom, to ensure there’s always something to keep the smaller guests entertained. Playgrounds are scattered around the site, including such things as trampolines, water play areas and sandpits, and there are also games of bowling, miniature golf and table tennis to play. Not worn them out yet? Try a bit of splash time at the heated outdoor pool, or sign them up for activities organised by entertainment staff in the games room throughout the summer. For quieter times, steer them over to the petting zoo to meet the deer and chickens (and snap some pics of the big boar to share online, using the wifi that’s available for a small fee). Along with all this come some handy facilities on the essentials front too – each safari tent is set up with a well-equipped mobile kitchen that can be wheeled out into the open or kept under cover, and there’s a snack bar for when either seems like too much effort. Tents also have their own bathrooms, and there’s a laundry facility for those who’ve managed to get themselves truly mucky on their travels.

It’s a fine idea to start your local explores on two wheels – if you’ve not brought them along, hire bikes on site to pedal around nearby. If you always find yourself keen to kick off your shoes after a ride, bike over to Blote Voetenpad (10 minutes’ ride) to wander on the barefoot trail through the woods. Or perhaps your woodland rides will entice you to get up into the trees? If so, head to Klimbos Brabantse Wal (10 minutes by bike) to take on the high ropes course and ziplines. If you’d rather keep your rural outings at ground level, the Minnebeek Groenhuysen kids’ farm (15 minutes’ drive) is a good bet. To mix up your country days with some town time, head into the centre of Bergen op Zoom (10 minutes’ drive/15 by bike) to see the history museum in a 15th-century palace, or aim beyond to Tholen (15 minutes’ drive/45 by bike), where there’s a windmill and medieval city walls to wander around. Antwerp, 45 minutes’ drive away across the Belgian border, is easily doable too – there are excellent museums here dedicated to art, fashion and history, plus some stunning architecture.
