Although the 15th-century Berg Castle (15 minutes’ drive) is not open to the public, you can admire the architecture from the outside and check the top of the tower for the flag that indicates if the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (whose residence this is) is in. Or you can have a meal at one of the restaurants in Château de Bourglinster (20 minutes), parts of which date from the 13th century.
In Luxembourg (half an hour), the Bock Casemates are an 18th-century system of defences carved out of the rock. For something completely different, check out the contemporary offerings at the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art, or catch a performance at the Rotondes cultural centre. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, so you can just jump on and off a bus and explore in comfort.
Step across the border into Germany and visit Trier (50 minutes), an ancient Roman city on the banks of the Moselle. After admiring the archaeological collections at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, take the weight off your feet for a spot of people-watching at one of the cafés lining the central Hauptmarkt square.
