If you're not content with sticking to the shallows at the beach, have a chat with the team at the on-site diving centre to sort days bubbling away below the surface. Coming face-to-face with fish doesn't have to involve getting wet though: potter off to Porto Santo Stefano (10 minutes’ drive) to visit its aquarium. Porto Santo Stefano's also the place to cast off for boat trips to gorgeous Giglio island for more fab beaches, snorkelling, a castle and panficato sweets – buy them when you see them, as they're only available on the island. More watery days out can be had watching wildlife in Orbetello Lagoon nature area (10 minutes’ drive) or soaking in the Terme di Saturnia thermal baths (55 minutes). Tuscany’s renowned for its historic bits and bobs, and this part is no exception: top picks nearby include Padri Passionisti hilltop convent (15 minutes) and the pretty medieval town of Capalbio (half an hour). If art’s more your thing, drive over to the Tarot Garden, a colourful open-air sculpture park 25 minutes away.
