It's all about immersing yourselves in the pure nature of the Calabrian countryside at Calabria Incontaminata. This property was once home to 'Nonno Giovanni’ and his farming operations, and it's now being reclaimed as a social farm that aims to revive agriculture here with a mix of traditional techniques and eco-sustainable approaches.
Part of that project involves opening the place up for wild-style camping experiences, with guests bedding down among natural landscapes of Mediterranean scrub, wildflower meadows, oak groves, and copses of cork and olive trees. The views by day are gorgeous, stretching over to the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia and Aeolian islands; by night, the lack of light pollution means you should be treated to some spectacular stargazing.
All guests are welcome here, whether you're travelling with kids, friends, dogs, your partner or just your own thoughts. Nonno Giovanni’s old farmhouse still remains, as does a former stable that’s been kitted out with a solar-powered kitchenette and a toilet, shower and sink fed by a rainwater collection tank. Drinking water is also available, and so is a barbecue area.
There’s a truly remote vibe at this site – one that should encourage you to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life – but the location is not completely cut off. In fact, it's in a rather lovely spot between the pretty towns of Gizzeria and Falerna (both about 10 minutes' drive), and with the Calabria coast a similar length of drive away for beach days and watersports.

You’ll probably have to pop in to Gizzeria (10 minutes’ drive) sooner or later for shops and other amenities, but you should also make time to have a look around while you're there – the town has remnants of ancient Greek and Italian settlements to look out for, and an elegant church to admire.
Gizzeria Lido (15 minutes) is also worth a visit – the beach often hosts the World Kitesurfing Championships and has both free and equipped areas for visitors. Fancy having a go at some of those thrilling watersports for yourself? Take a look at what's available at Hang Loose Beach (20 minutes).
Heading inland, there are some great hikes and mountain bike trails around Monte Mancuso (20 minutes) and forest walks at Parco Bombarda (45 minutes). The city of Lamezia Terme (half an hour) is another good place to visit, with the Diocesan Museum, Casa del Libro Antico and Lametino Archaeological Museum as well as the natural hot springs that gave the place its name.
