Attractions in the immediate vicinity of the site include the pretty stone Monastery of Holy Mary the God-Covered (five minutes’ drive), which sits behind crenellated walls in the middle of an olive grove; and the Cultural Park, with life-sized dinosaurs and the Museum of Greek Folklore (five minutes), with recreated old-fashioned workshops. On the slopes of Velatouri Hill is the Archaeological Site of Thorikos (15 minutes), with ruins of houses, workshops and tombs, plus an amphitheatre (with spectacular sea views) that dates from the 6th century BC and is believed to be the oldest in the whole of Greece. In Laurium (15 minutes), the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion displays statuary, a well-preserved mosaic floor and a decorative fascia from the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, as well as items from the metal workshops that operated in the local area until the 6th century.
