Get set for lots of fabulous fresh-air activities to fill your holiday – family-friendly Camping des 5 Vallées has stunning views of forest and mountains, a backdrop that gives just a hint of the landscape you could be hiking, cycling, rafting, kayaking or paragliding through… This handsome Hautes-Alpes location is on the edge of the Écrins National Park, less than 10 minutes’ drive from the pretty town of Briançon. For cyclists, this is Tour France territory, while for skiers the main attraction may well be the slopes of nearby Serre-Chevalier. Hikers may like to take walks around Névache while families try out local adventure parks. Whatever fills your days, you’ll be able to refresh afterwards with a dip in the heated outdoor pool (open in high season) – and that goes for the kids too, who can splash about in the paddling pool. There's also a play area and games room where they can let off a little more energy. Keeping everyone fed should be a doddle here – guests can order pizzas and crêpes as well as tasty home-cooked meals with a local flavour (tourtons, boite chaud, ravioli and the like). There’s also a small shop for self-catering guests, along with a bakery service where you can order bread and pastries to kick-start your day with a good breakfast. Along with all this, you’ll have the chance to join in with guided hikes and live music events, and on Friday evenings everyone comes together in the bar for a dance party that's suitable for all the family.

Cycle tourers, you should probably get a little bit of training in before heading up here – these are hills that challenge even the hardy Tour de France competitors. Look out for footage of the competitors taking on the passes of Izoard, Galibier and Lautaret and you'll have an idea of what you’re in for… For other ways to experience the scenery, there are lots of hiking trails around, plus skiing at Serre-Chevalier (half an hour’s drive), a rafting centre (five minutes) and several paragliding outfits (within 10 minutes). The area around Briançon has several adventure parks with tree-climbing trails where kids can get a taste for outdoor challenges. Taking it easy for a while, have a stroll around the pretty town of Briançon (10 minutes), exploring the UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications while you're there. You might also like to learn about the area's geology and industrial past at La Mine d’argent (15 minutes) or take a day trip to another country – the Italian border is only about half an hour’s drive away.
