What a cracking coastal spot this is – if you’re the sort that seeks out lots of seaside days on hols you’ve found a great base at Camping La Garenne. The jaunt to the nearest beach from this Port-des-Barques site involves simply nipping across the road, and you’ll also be within easy reach of lots more Charente-Maritime faves, including Royan, La Rochelle and the bike-friendly Oléron island. Pile on top of that coastal hikes, watersports, boat trips, museums, an aquarium and a zoo (and more beaches, bien sûr) and you’ll note that it’s a wise move to plump for as lengthy a stay as poss at this place. And it’s an equally wise move to factor in a bit of flopping-out time between your days out (all those fun times can get terribly tiring…) Poolside is probably the place to be for that – there are plenty of loungers gathered on the sun terrace for sunbathing between swims, and supervising the small sorts as they splash in the paddling pool. Pétanque courts and a playground take care of times when you’d rather stay dry, and there’s a whole heap of activities to pick from in summer: crafts, sports and outings cater for kids, teens and grownups through the day, while the evenings are filled with quizzes, movies and showing off your grooviest dad dancing moves at the disco. Scheduling a bit of time for eats is a fine plan too – settle in for meals at the site’s restaurant, wander up to the village centre in 15 minutes for restaurants and bakeries or sort supplies at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Soubise.

Em va agradar: Friendly reception, peaceful site, choice of pitches. Whilst touring around France me and my wife tend to do one night stops using Aires and campsites. We don’t need luxury just somewhere friendly, relatively peaceful and with good facilities, this site ticked those boxes quite well.

No em va agradar: Not so much a dislikes but things to note. You have to take your own loo roll to the toilets as none supplied. The site is aging and nature is showing signs of trying to take it back with grass coming through some off the roadways. Couldn’t connect any devices to the Wi-Fi.

Em va agradar: Plenty of space to choose a site in end of May, spacious pitches with good dividers. Clean facilities and hot showers but toilets very basic, definitely good value for money.

Em va agradar: Beautiful spacious pitches in a great area - walking, cycling and beaches all on the doorstep.

No em va agradar: The address on pitch up takes you to the wrong entrance. When you reach the barrier the barrier you can see a disused reception and you then have to back out onto the main road- not good in an 8m motorhome.

Em va agradar: Quiet site on our visit but suspect it will be busy in the better weather. Has everything you need although a bit tired and could do with a bit of modernisation. We messaged ahead because we were going to arrive late, however we got there just as reception was closing. We were told to pitch up and pay at reception the following day which was great. The shower block had lots of showers available with good hot water supply. We've got used to taking loo roll and a towel to the toilet now.

No em va agradar: Very dated facilities, toilets no hooks or shelf for bits and bobs on way to shower. The roads inside site atrocious up and down.

Llocs d'interès

If you’ve brought bikes, take them over to Oléron island – and if you haven’t, hire them on site and take them to Oléron island. There’s a fab network of cycle paths over here, linking villages, beaches and salt marshes, and they’re generally mercifully flat and quiet. It’ll take around 45 minutes to drive there; for an island escape closer to home, wander over to L’Isle Madame in half an hour. Sealife enthusiasts have much more to see than just beaches around here: La Corderie Royale in Rochefort (25 minutes’ drive) now houses the International Centre of the Sea, and you can board the old boat Hermione for a taste of life at sea. Should your interests lie more in life beneath the waves, take the 45-minute drive to the aquarium in La Rochelle, where more than 12,000 aquatic animals dwell in the tanks. To see landlubbing creatures instead, set off for a similar length of journey south to Zoo de la Palmyre, set across a splendid 18 hectares of pine forest.
