Half a kilometre of peaceful and private forest path… that's all you have to stroll to reach the sands from Camping de Sion, a teeny distance from the topping Vendée seaside town of Saint-Hilaire-De-Riez. Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez has sailing centres to teach you the ropes in boating and kayaking, and riding stables organising excursions into the surrounding woods. Its Côte de Lumière setting is between two other popular Vendée resorts, Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts, and you can also investigate the L'Île aux Jeux amusement park 12 kilometres away or a waterpark within minutes of the site. Even closer to home is Sion-sur-l'Océan, 10 minutes walk away and with a fine market on Tuesday and Friday mornings. And there's a fair amount to amuse on site, too: an indoor pool for swims and splashing in all weathers, a sandy playground with swings, slide and climbing frame, a pétanque court and a TV room for those times when you simply have to flop for a bit. Don't flop for too long though, lest you miss all the activities laid on for nippers and grownups alike throughout the summer months. You'll no doubt also want to rouse yourself for a bit of cooking at the communal barbecue area; a handy place to deal with the goodies you've picked up at the local markets (try Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez on Thursdays and Sundays to assemble a stash of treats).

Llocs d'interès

The small seaside town of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez has a spectacular stretch of sand reaching both its adjacent resorts of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts. The beaches of Les Marines, Merlin-Plage, Sion-sur-l'Océan and the Plage des Demoiselles are all lifeguarded and popular with families. Cycle and walking routes run through the forest behind the beaches of Saint-Hilaire; if you hire a bike from the Camping de Sion team, you can also pedal to Saint Gilles's marina and many seafood restaurants (sardines are the speciality here), or around the salt marshes surrounding the site. The mud huts of the Bourrine du Bois-Juquaud eco museum, in Saint-Hilaire, are also within easy pedalling distance. Three adrenalised days out are close by for families: the Atlantic Toboggan waterpark (one kilometre), the Feeling Forest tree climbing adventure park (two kilometres) and the three amusement parks of L'Île aux Jeux, 12 kilometres away at Challon.
