There’s an awful lot to be fond of at Camping Fondespierre – both for its handy Hérault location and its list of leisure offerings. Start with the setting… the site is an easily walkable/bikeable two kilometres from the shops and restaurants of Castries, and around a half-hour drive from both the stylish metropolis of Montpellier and the fine sandy beaches around Palavas-les-Flots and La Grande Motte (either one of which makes for an excellent day of Med-based relaxing or activities). Walking and horse riding routes can be picked up just outside the site, and the folk at reception can help sort days of canoeing, scuba diving and other activities nearby. And there’s a thumbs up for the activities available there on site too, particularly for folk who like to spend a good chunk of their hols by the pool, for the swimming area here has not one but two outdoor pools – one aimed at the kids and kitted out with a slide and shallower paddling pool, and the other a more grownup affair with a hot tub . Elsewhere around the two and a half hectares, there’s a pétanque court, a playground, a multisports court and an outdoor fitness area for those getting in a last bit of beach bod buffing… and on top of that, if you come along in summer there’s a buzzy bunch of activities running throughout the day and merging into evening entertainment. Ice creams are, of course, vital for powering all such activities – they can be picked up from reception, where guests can also acquire various essentials (including beer and wine) and order bread and pastries for breakfast. More substantial eats can be had at the snack bar in high season.

Did someone say beach? It’s highly likely, for there are several excellent sandy stretches around here. Half an hour’s drive will get you to either Palavas-les-Flots for sunbathing and swims, or to La Grande Motte for boat trips and watersports. If the sun’s not coming out to play, you can still have a taste of the sea at Seaquarium in Le Grau-du-Roi (40 minutes). Flanking this part of the coast is the Camargue National Park (45 minutes), best explored on horseback or on a barge ride. To take in more of the area’s stunning scenery, delve underground at La Grotte des Demoiselles (45 minutes), clamber up Pic Saint-Loup (half an hour) or set off for Sète (40 minutes) to gaze over Thau Lake. You’ll want to make time for Montpellier (half an hour) as well – the city’s a top-notch one for historic wanders, museum trips and long lazy lunches, and it’s also got a zoo that’s popular with les enfants.
