Looking to escape the daily grind for a few days? It’s time to head for Parc de Coullons, five minutes’ drive from Coullons in the Centre-Val de Loire. Set steps away from the Étang de la Plancherotte, this leafy, tree-lined haven is two hours or so drive from Paris, making it a handy weekend getaway from the big city with family and friends – or perhaps colleagues on a team-building retreat. Facilities on site are designed to make your stay a breeze: there's a menu of regional dishes and daily specials in the terrace restaurant and several food outlets are available 24/7, including vending machines for paninis, pizza and tacos. A self-service laundry service helps you keep on top of chores, there’s a play area with swings and slides for the kids, and dog walks are nearby for those bringing their four-pawed chums. All guests should find plenty to amuse themselves with around the site, perhaps starting with the challenging Transibérica cycling route, which carves its way across central France. You also have direct access to shorter biking trails and hiking routes traversing the Gâtinais region, and coarse fishing on the Étang de la Plancherotte. The medieval attractions of nearby Sully-sur-Loire (20 minutes by car) are your gateway to the fabled châteaux of the Loire Valley.

Em va agradar That we finally got our money back

No em va agradar The campsite was advertised as having a swimming pool, a snack bar and being by a lake. None of these things were true. When we arrived the campsite was still being built. I arrived and the friendly receptionist showed me a bill stating that they hadn't actually taken any money yet, so if we wanted to change our mind that was fine. As the campsite was actually a noisy building site, we said that would probably be best. Later that day, I got an email saying that as we had booked through Pitchup they were unable to refund and we had to contact them. I knew that Pitchup would not take any responsibility, so I went back to the campsite 2 days later to request a refund. I got the same response. Pitchup takes no responsibility for advertising scam campsites, and makes it incredibly difficult to contact them, and they don't take responsibility for complaints. Eventually Pitchup agreed to 'act as a mediator' and only after threatening to take my evidence to the authorities I finally got my money back. Pitchup, of course, did not refund the deposit they had taken. Not only do I not recommend this campsite because they are misleading (to say the least), I would also not recommend using Pitchup.

If you’re up for a couple of days doing some urban sightseeing, the Royal Abbey in historic Ferrières-en-Gâtinais (50 minutes' drive) could be the place to start: it was once the coronation site for French kings and today is fêted for its jewel-like stained-glass windows. You can also spot traditional stone washhouses on strolls along the Cléry River. Medieval Sully-sur-Loire (20 minutes’ drive) may be your next port of call. Springboard to the châteaux of the Loire Valley, the town’s own splendid 14th-century castle is open for tours of priceless decorative arts as well as walks along its ramparts for views over the moat. Close by is the Château de St-Brisson-sur-Loire (20 minutes), which has medieval-themed treasure hunts and a history museum devoted to kids. Most children will love the eccentric carousel and sculptures built out of scrap metal at La Fabuloserie, or they can let off steam on the high ropes at Léo Adventure Park (both an hour). Closer to base camp, you can all go kayaking or paddleboarding on the Étang du Puits (20 minutes).
