Brittany has much to explore, so it’s well worth getting out and about a few times while you’re here. A good place to start is the Brocéliande Forest (35 minutes’ drive) where you can take guided or self-guided hikes through the woods and moors to learn about the legends of Merlin the wizard, Lancelot the knight and Vivien the fairy or stop at Comper Castle to visit the Arthurian Centre and walk along scenic trails. There’s a lovely lake at Comper, but if you want to take to the water you’ll need to go to Lake Guerlédan (40 minutes), which has paddleboarding, kayaking and a wild swimming area (dips being particularly welcome after a walk round the lake). Although the rural landscapes are lovely, there are some excellent towns around for urban wanders as well. The half-timbered houses of Rennes, the towers of Vannes and the maritime town of Lorient are all around an hour’s drive away and worth a day out.
