Camping Aurilandes

Lovely lovely Landes, the Aquitaine department in south-west France with Europe's longest beach... And lovely lovely Camping Aurilandes, set right next to Aureilhan Lake and with all sorts of watery sports and other pursuits on site. First up for us, we think, would be the on-site aquatic centre, with swimming pool, paddling pool for tiddlers and a hot tub, and from there we'd possibly wend our wrinkly way to the Jacuzzi and sauna in the wellness centre (18s and over only, please). After finally emerging, there'd then be the pick of the gym room or the many sports facilities on site to try the likes of basketball, football, volleyball, pétanque and table tennis. A playground for the kids is also around and entertainment/activities are organised for les petits in high season.

By car: From Bordeaux (110km), take the N10, south towards Bayonne and exit at Junction 16, following the directions to Mimizan on the D626. After the first roundabout just outside Aureilhan, make a right turn onto Route de Lamarque and continue until you arrive at the campsite. By train: Labouheyre (27km) By plane: Bordeaux-Mérignac (110km)

Wend your wrinkly way to more watery pursuits in the Landes region, most of which are only ten minutes from Camping Aurilandes. The two districts Mimizan-Bourg and Mimizan-Plage of the town of Mimizan are 5km away: go here for markets, walking and cycling trails, and wildlife watching in the surrounding countryside. Also nearby is horse riding a kilometre away and a football camp with qualified sports instructors, held during weekdays for girls and boys aged seven to 17.
