Folk making tracks for Macapá (visiting the university, perhaps, or en route to/from French Guiana), take a look at Chalé Quintal Amazon, a quiet, tree-filled site around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of town.
As the name suggests, the site is close to the banks of the Amazon river, which means that it frequently benefits from the cool breeze that blows along the river (bliss on one of those baking-hot days of summer…). And that’s not all the plus points for the nifty location: there are stunning Amazonian sunsets. A gym and a couple of restaurants are within a short walk, and the site is also a short drive from the university and a good-sized shopping mall. The annual event at Expofeira is five minutes' drive away, too.
If the river breeze isn’t quite enough to help you keep your cool, stroll over to the outdoor pool for a swim while the kids splash in the paddling pool or swish down the slide. A recreation area and sandy sports court are also on site for those that fancy a run around, along with a wifi connection for quieter times.
Prefer self-catering to restaurant dining? Barbecue grills are provided for outdoor eats, and the site also has a covered kitchen space where guests can prep meals and serve up at the dining table. Ask the team about the local farm with regional cuisine like fish, shrimp and açaí.

See the animals at Amazon Biopark (five minutes) too, sending the brave in your group along to the zipwires and tree-climbing course.
Up in Macapá, you might like to see a bit more of the mighty Amazon by having a wander along the Trapiche Eliezer Levy riverside boardwalk and visiting waterfront São José de Macapá Fortress, built in the 18th century and still standing strong today. It’s worth diving into the riverside Sacaca Museum too, to have a look around traditional houses and displays of bits and bobs collected from Amazonian locals.
Time to cool off again? Head out of town to the waterslide and colourful kids’ play areas at Aquaplay Macapá waterpark (40 minutes). If you’d rather watch others in action, see if you can catch a game of football at Zerao Stadium (40 minutes).
