Loads of campsites are off-grid and non-electric, but not that many come with their own birdwatching facilities. Handily for all you bird-spotters out there, The Hide Pembrokeshire does, giving you the chance to spot tawny owls and woodpeckers on your back-to-nature mini break. With dramatic views to the Irish Sea, the campsite is surrounded by tall trees and set down a quiet lane in Pembrokeshire countryside. The owners are proud of their green credentials, offering eco-friendly, low-impact stays. The beach is just a few minutes away on foot, and handy local stores just a five-minute drive away in Dinas Cross. By day, you can unwind in the fresh sea air, and by night, cosy up around your campfire and – thanks to the lack of light pollution – enjoy stargazing up to the glittering sky. Spacious camping pitches are mown into long grass, and with very few pitches, there’s no chance of ever feeling crowded here. Each pitch can accommodate one family-size tent (or two smaller ones) and vehicles are not allowed on the field itself. There's an allocated parking area in the woodland at the entrance to the site, where wheelbarrows are on hand for your gear. Amenities here have been cleverly designed to blend into the scenery – you'll have access to a drinking water tap, compost loos and LPG showers, along with recycling facilities. Please note that there is an unfenced wildlife pond at this site; children are welcome but you'll need to be careful with them around the water for their safety.

Em va agradar The setting, the check-in and communication, the bed and bedding, the atmosphere - all beautiful and really well done.

No em va agradar No power! I know its nice to live off grid but for a glamping option, its good to have a power socket somewhere, even if at a communal area for the whole campsite. I was staying for a long weekend party for a friend in Newport and couldn't dry my hair, charge my phone, etc etc so probably wouldn't have booked if I knew this... A mirror would be nice too although not just the little one in the toilet! Otherwise, loved everything else.

Parcel·la de gespa sense electricitat per a tenda de campanya

Em va agradar I really appreciated what Jemma and Geraint had done to make such a nature friendly site- all the planting of trees, the pond, setting up compost toilets and making it possible to have a 'low impact on the environment' holiday! They have really created a site for the future as the trees grow up and provide more shelter from sun and wind. I loved the fact that there was so much space for everyone and you were not right on top of anyone, there was space for children to meet and play freely and safely and for adults to have privacy if they wanted. The compost toilets were really impressive! They were kept so clean and worked so well. It was great to have a hot shower too. I also loved the fact we were so near the sea you could just walk down the hill to the beach

The Welsh Wildlife Centre (35 minutes’ drive) has loads of different hides and walking trails as well as resident water buffalo and the chance to spot otters on the Teifi river (nothing’s ever guaranteed when it comes to animals), while Llangloffan Fen (20 minutes) is the habitat of barn owls and hen harriers. You can book cruises from Martin's Haven (an hour) to Skomer Island to watch comical puffin colonies, and you might get to see dolphins and Atlantic grey seals on the way as well. Kids can use up excess energy on bumper cars, go-karts and high ropes at Heatherton World of Activities (an hour). Best-suited to younger children, there’s a petting zoo and walking safaris at Manor Wildlife Park (55 minutes). Newport (10 minutes) is a cute seaside town packed with cafés, ice cream shops, a grocery store and a Monday produce market for replenishing supplies. It's also worth checking out St Davids (half an hour), with lots of indie shops as well as the famed cathedral.
