‘Don’t expect a swimming pool, a bar or a shop’ say the owners of Dolgamedd Caravan and Camping Park – this laidback Gwynedd site is a place that's all about the joy of no-frills stays, embracing the natural setting and soaking up the peace of its fabulous Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park location. Indeed there may be no pool, but this laidback family-run site has something that's arguably just as enticing, as it's on the banks of the Wnion river, with direct access to the river for fishing, paddles and swims if you like (chillier than a pool, perhaps, but still a whole lot of fun…) Guests have been coming here for many years, with several of them returning time and again for repeated doses of the peaceful atmosphere on site and the plethora of outdoor activities available in the local area. Dolgellau (10 minutes' drive) is a well-known hub for walkers and hikers, and there are plenty of options nearby for mountain bikers and climbers too. Getting out and about should be fairly straightforward, as the site is only a little way off the A494 and has a bus stop almost outside. The evening activity of choice on site is usually a quiet glass of wine and a barbecue or campfire by the river – and to keep that peaceful vibe going there's a no-music policy here, and a general request to preserve the peace (party types and large groups will need to look elsewhere for their accommodation). Although this site is no-frills in style, it does have a good collection of essential facilities for its guests – these include toilets, showers, wifi, a launderette, a shared fridge and freezer, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Em va agradar Great location next to the river. My boys loved playing in the river. Facilities were perfect. Clean and warm showers. Electric hook up worked perfectly.

Em va agradar Excellent site, including riverside field for wild-ish tent camping. Toilets and showers very clean, water hot, simple kitchen area for washing up and food prep (though note no kettle or cooker). Staff friendly and helpful: recommended!

Em va agradar Loved the riverside grass pitch with EHU. Had its own bench, own fire pit and own bbq platform…as well as the river setting.

Toilets and Shower block were great too…push button showers that were instantly warm and ran long enough on one push.

Zero WiFi and no signal…may be a problem for some, but amazing if you’re trying to escape that digital, connected world…which I was for 16 hours.

No em va agradar Only slight point…it was very dark around the site, maybe some small solar lights would be good to signpost people in the dark…but really…who doesn’t have some sort of light source on their phone…or a torch.

Em va agradar We have a riverside non electric pitch, great customer service from the beginning, staff were really friendly and happy to suggest walking routes. The pitch beside the river was very big and calming in the environment. Clean facilities and pitch side parking. The place was dog friendly and had a good approach to recycling.

No em va agradar Facilities were a little dated, the showers were on a single button timer which meant you had 60 seconds before the water cuts out and you couldn't adjust the temperature.

Em va agradar Was a great campsite, lovely scenery, reception lady was nice, very quiet campsite

No em va agradar Someone doing Coke in toilets of the sink and someone else smoking weed on the swinging bench outside, also toilets and showers could've been cleaner but apart from that we had a fantastic time the caravan site is in the middle of some great areas and was really fun lovely beach in barmouth

This area is home to some of the most popular walking trails in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park, including the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk (both trailheads are within 10 minutes' drive). Those of a more ambitious nature may like to tackle the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris (15 minutes away) or the mountain bike paths at Coed-y-Brenin (20 minutes) while families and leisure cyclists try the riverside Mawddach Trail (10 minutes). Up the thrill levels again with an activity at the National White Water Centre (half an hour) or one of the adventures on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes). All a bit too hair-raising? Opt instead to visit the Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour) or take a stroll around the colourful village of Portmeirion (40 minutes). Taking to the coast is always an option, too – perhaps for some bird spotting at RSPB Mawddach Valley (10 minutes), some history at Harlech Castle (45 minutes) or a day on the beach at Barmouth (25 minutes).
