The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscapes is one of the less visited of these preserved areas, so space-seekers should do fairly well around here. Moel Famau (10 minutes' drive to the trailhead) is one of the best known spots but there are plenty of quiet trails around where you may well not see many other visitors. If you like a bit more activity, set off for a day at Chester Zoo (35 minutes’ drive) or seek adventure at the likes of Bala Lake, the National White Water Centre and ZipWorld Betws-y-Coed (all within an hour). The pretty city of Chester (35 minutes) makes a good day out, for a circuit of the city walls and a wander among the half-timbered houses. And there’s always the option of castle or coast, too – Mold, Flint and Denbigh castles are all within a 20-minute drive, and a journey of half an hour will get you to beach days in Prestatyn or Rhyl.
