Fancy walking in a farmer’s wellies for the day? Then it’s time to head for Campview Farm, overlooking the Erne Estuary in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, where you can go llama trekking, cuddle a cow (it’s good for your blood pressure) and book tours to see behind the scenes on a working dairy, beef and sheep farm.
And things just get better for nature lovers, as parts of the farm are a European Protected Site, with over-wintering birds including mute and whooper swans, wigeon and teal – so make sure you bring binoculars with you. You also have access to a private beach, and there’s trout fishing on the Erne Estuary; you can buy permits locally. A barbecue is available for communal use on site, and you can pick up goodies to grill from the local supermarket (five minutes’ drive).
This rural getaway is also handily located for jaunts along the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way, and it’s close to the popular seaside towns of Bundoran (10 minutes) and Rossnowlagh (20 minutes), both decent surfing spots.
Please be aware that facilities at this site are limited to self-contained vehicles, so ensure your campervan is equipped accordingly.

Regarded as Ireland’s oldest town, Ballyshannon (five minutes’ drive) has a self-guided heritage walk taking in its church, River Erne views and a small local history museum. There’s a lively schedule of music and theatre at the Abbey Arts Centre, and you can pay tribute to blues guitarist Rory Gallagher (born here in 1948) at his much-loved landmark statue.
Bundoran (10 minutes) centres on Tullan Strand Beach, popular among surfers. Waterworld Bundoran (open summer only) is a vast aquapark with waterslides and pools – it makes a clever venue for rainy days – and the dramatic Rougey Cliff Walk has stunning views out over the Atlantic Ocean.
There are looped walks around Assaroe Reservoir (10 minutes), where you can also try out kayaking or go fishing. If you’d rather explore further afield in County Donegal, learn a little about regional history with a tour of the immaculately restored Donegal Castle (25 minutes). A drive along a section of the Wild Atlantic Way (five minutes) will also inspire you with a love of Ireland as you explore its spectacular coastline and clifftop views.
