Devon Eco Retreat

A eco-friendly campsite on 96 acres of chemical-free meadows and woods at an organically run city farm, Devon Eco Retreat is just north of Exeter and around 40 minutes’ drive from south-coast beaches. This is very much for families and friends looking for an offbeat spot run along sustainable lines, rather than an organised holiday park with masses of facilities. With all the accommodation units tucked away among trees, there is a simple communal camper’s kitchen with a gas cooker, tables and chairs, plus a firepit for cosying up around at night. Other amenities pretty much start and stop at showers; they are in a shepherd’s hut and are powered by a woodfired stove that needs stoking; it heats two showers per go. Just so you know, there’s no electricity, the mobile reception is poor, and the pitches are not car-friendly, so some walking with camping gear is called for from the parking area. The showers are also a fair yomp from some of the wild woodland pitches.
