Looking for somewhere where no-one will ever find you? Try a Hampshire hideaway… Dalton’s Den is strictly one for the grown-ups, a snug Swiss-style wooden cabin tucked into a leafy garden at the end of a cul-de-sac in Chandler’s Ford.
This romantic retreat from the world has a timber exterior, a patio adorned with fairy lights, and a comfy interior gussied up with wood panelling, fur rugs and alpine decor (complete with skis, of course). It’s just the spot for cuddling up around the fire, playing your favourite tunes on the jukebox or squabbling over which film to watch on Netflix.
Accompany your binge viewing with a supply of snacks (pay by honesty box) or old-world sherbet fountains from the vending machine, which takes a one-pound coin to operate.
A sofa bed does duty as a double bed by night, and there’s an outdoor solar-powered shower that’s only functional in brighter months. For cooking, there’s all the utensils you need in the compact kitchenette (note: no running water, that’s outside) from microwave to slow cooker and toaster.
If the weather suits, have a soak in the hot tub (extra charge), or dine outside on the terrace – if you need supplies, Chandler’s Ford shops are around 10 minutes’ walk away.
Dalton’s Den makes a handy overnight stop if you’re going cruising or holidaying on the Isle of Wight, as the cruise and ferry terminals in Southampton are around 20 minutes’ drive away.

Time-travel back to Anglo-Saxon times at 878 AD, an immersive romp through the history of Winchester (15 minutes’ drive), a city in which you can also explore the centuries-old cathedral – resting place of author Jane Austen – see a recreation of mythical King Arthur’s Round Table under the vaulting of the medieval Great Hall, and have a snoop around a clutch of history and military museums.
There’s more Hampshire heritage on display at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (35 minutes), open for guided tours of world-renowned ships including the Tudor-era Mary Rose, Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson’s HMS Victory and a World War II submarine.
If you’d rather spend time in the open air, grab your walking boots and head for the woodland trails in New Forest National Park (15 minutes look out for the ponies), or divert to Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes) for hikes and bike rides over the chalk downlands.
