Time in the Test Valley is time well spent – this lovely pocket of Hampshire is well-known for its scenery, clear chalk streams and gentle pace of life, making it just the spot for a laidback camping break. Stockbridge View, a quiet site near the Test Valley market town of Stockbridge, is conveniently located just off the A30. This back to basics choice is within easy reach of Winchester (20 minutes' drive), Salisbury (25 minutes), Stonehenge (25 minutes) and Southampton (35 minutes). The pitches here are set over a flat and grassy area that's bordered by trees and hedgerows. You can pitch up wherever you like at this laidback farm spot, and all parts of the site are a few minutes’ walk from good basic amenities like a modern toilet and shower block and a chemical disposal point (please use green fluid). Campfires, barbecues and firepits are welcome here as long as they are lifted well off the grass. Handily, firewood is available to buy if you haven't brought your own fuel. Wood-fired pizzas, kebabs, pub food and a small supermarket are all available less than a mile away in Stockbridge town centre via a quiet bridleway. Please note that there's a clay pigeon shooting range half a mile away and therefore there may be some noise from that heard on site (mainly on Saturdays, but sometimes on other days).

Em va agradar: Clean facilities. Shower was really nice as it has fast flowing hot water. Very close to Stockbridge with a nice footpathed walk to town.

No em va agradar: Sadly, the road was very noisy. Not the site's fault but it is right next to a reasonably busy, fast road.

No em va agradar: Pitch up email and text did not have the gate code so had to call the campsite on arrival for it.

Em va agradar: What a lucky find!! Excellent value for money, flat comfortable pitch,(crucially, well draining too- rained most of my stay!) convenient safe footpath to town and pubs, and the shower was luxuriantly hot with great pressure. No fuss booking and setup. I will 100% come back to camp here next time I'm fishing in the summer months

Em va agradar: The site is well kept, and showers and toilets in a clean and good state. The views are lovely, and the pathwY behind the site to Stockbridge saves quite a few minutes walk.

No em va agradar: I think a bucket should be provided in the showered are to allow the mops to be rinsed.

For greenery and gardens, try Houghton Lodge (five minutes' drive), a small-scale spot dating back to the late 18th century in a gorgeous riverside location. The grounds at Mottisfont (15 minutes), a National Trust-managed house and garden, may be a bit grander in scale, but they're in a relaxed country location and aren't too big for a day out with young kids. This part of the world has lots of military connections, so how about a trip to the Army Flying Museum (10 minutes), or to Winchester (20 minutes) and its regimental collections in Peninsula Square? Inspired to try a bit of target practice yourself? The Spitfire Shoot (five minutes) can sort you with clay pigeon sessions (mostly on Saturdays, but sometimes at other times too). A little bit further away there are world-class attractions like Stonehenge (25 minutes), a must-see when visiting this part of the world, as well as family-focused options like Paultons Park (30 minutes), a theme park, and the interactive exhibits at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke (30 minutes).
