A south-coast sojourn in the light-filled and south-facing Eastbourne Cottages puts you bang in the middle of all the Eastbourne waterfront action in East Sussex. Close to many of the town’s amenities, the cosy two-bedroom cottages are designed and fitted out with pretty much everything you need for a relaxing break. Comfy living rooms and bedrooms are filled with homely comforts (plump cushions, pictures on the wall, pretty lampshades), and the conservatories catch the evening sunlight on summer days. Kitchens come equipped with the bits you need to produce full meals, and you can pick up supplies from the stores and supermarkets of Eastbourne – the nearest is five minutes’ walk. Of ourse, you may decide to forego cooking altogether and eat in the lively waterside cafés and restaurants of Sovereign Harbour (10 minutes’ walk), overlooking the marina from sea-view terraces. Found in a gated community on a private holiday park, the cottages led themselves to weekend getaways or longer breaks with family and friends. Enjoy chilled family time, laze on the beach from morning until sunset, or set about exploring the South Downs National Park. There is free parking nearby, and if you’re travelling on public transport, Eastbourne train station is a 15-minute bus journey away.

As well as the meandering paths and cycle routes across the undulating South Downs National Park (five minutes’ drive), there’s much to do along the coastline around Eastbourne: the massive chalk cliffs and lighthouse at Beachy Head (20 minutes’ drive) and the chalky landmark cliffs at Seven Sisters (25 minutes) for starters – you get a clear view of the latter from the pebbly beach at National Trust-owned Birling Gap (25 minutes). Bexhill-on-Sea (half an hour) is the resort to pick for golf on links courses and arty exhibitions at the modernist De La Warr Pavilion, while the quiet shingle beach at Cuckmere Haven is popular for fishing at the mouth of its namesake river (both half an hour). Should you ever tire of Sussex beaches in all their disguises, animal-mad families may consider a day out at Drusillas Park (20 minutes), where you can meet lemurs, sloths and lorikeets or take a spin on carousels. Kids still not tired? Try them out on the pirate-themed rides or adventure golf at Treasure Island Adventure Park in Hastings (40 minutes).
