Functional simplicity mixed with comfort and style… that sums up this glamping cabin based just outside of the Lake District National Park. Dog Crag Cabin is a wise base for active breaks: beaches, lakes and other south Lake District landscapes are all easy to access. So, where exactly is this cabin? On a former farm in a valley in southwest Cumbria, it’s just four miles from Millom and a five- minute drive from Silecroft Beach in the south of the national park. The Cumbria Coastal Way, which snakes its way along the Lake District coast, is nearby and can be accessed from a footpath direct from the farm. That’s coastal hikes on your itinerary already. Horse riding treks might feature too – there’s a trekking centre five minutes’ drive away. There are more hikes out onto fells or you might want to visit the local golf course (10 minutes’ drive) and go fishing in Haverigg (10 minutes). Foodies will be happy to find shops and pubs within five to 10 minutes’ drive of the site too. The cabin is actually a barn conversion – through the arched door, there’s a well-designed, modern and open-plan timber interior, splendidly lit and tastefully decorated with a four-poster bed. Ensuite facilities, which include a shower, and kitchen facilities are included. Up to two pets are welcome, as are any couples or solo travellers. Whoever you bring, don’t forget to climb the often-forgotten Wainwright’s Black Combe (five minutes’ drive), which has views over the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man.

Em va agradar: The cabin was lovely and cosy. The bed was really comfortable. I liked sitting on the little sofa and reading the tiny house/cabin books. It is a really peaceful area and Silecroft beach is just a short drive away. Would recommend the Byre Cafe in Bootle.

Em va agradar: Beautiful cabin and surrounding fields, lovely pebbly beach and good walks. Good for walkers, people who want some zen.

No em va agradar: Not much of a dislike more a recommendation- surrounding villages very quiet/derelict, it’s great if you want to have meals in the cabin and have some peace and not experience of Fomo. Then again I did visit middle of winter, may be more lively in Summer!!

Things are very quiet in early January but our fantastic new beach cafe at Silecroft with a lovely menu and views of the sea is great even on a winter day and is dog friendly. We also have a great pub at Kirksanton (King William) which is open for breakfast lunch and dinner even in the winter,also dog friendly. Maybe a bit quiet but not derelict for sure.😁

Em va agradar: Absolute gem of a place!!! We really loved everything about it. Decided to book and come with our dog to escape the New Year’s fireworks! Amazing location, close to lots of beautiful countryside walks, a short drive from Silecroft beach, Millom and Haverigg and not far a drive from the south of The Lake District (Coniston and Ulverston). The cabin has everything you think you may need and then more! Fully equipped campers’ kitchen, basic but modern, a good size fridge (has no freezer/ice box), electric hob plate, toaster, microwave and kettle. Best night’s sleep we’ve had in a while too, the bed was so comfy! So cozy, peaceful and considering it was the end of December, it was very warm and clean too. Decent sized bathroom with walk-in shower. Lots of plugs to charge your phone/tablet, good Wi-Fi (we streamed series on our tablet fine and even had a couple of Skype calls), dog friendly, parking is available right next to the cabin too and there is a little guide book in the cabin carefully put together by our host Louise who was so lovely and friendly and happily answered all my questions! We loved it so much that we ended up extending our stay for one more night too and we’re also considering coming back for our anniversary in spring. It was the perfect stay for us and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend New Year’s. Thank you and we’ll definitely be back next new year!

Del gerent: Thanks for the great review, for future guests, we lost power in the area for a few hours due to Storm Bert, hence the heating, but as we live on site fortunately we can check on any issues and keep guests up to date. Luckily power cuts are rare and usually only due to extreme weather but these guests were great sports, many thanks guys!

Del gerent: Thanks for the review and for staying, you definitely hit the weather jackpot! You can use the wfi to stream TV if you bring you own lap top or screen, the wifi is pretty good with unlimited data.We can't get normal TV due to the signal being blocked by Dog Crag above the property.

If you’re planning to spend most of your time outdoors, good news – Grizedale Forest (55 minutes’ drive) is carved out with cycling and mountain biking trails and there are obstacle courses and zipwires slung between the treetops for the daring types. Brockhole on Windermere (55 minutes) has more on that front, especially for budding kayakers and archers. As for spots frequented by historic figures, Wordsworth Grasmere (an hour) was once occupied by poet Wordsworth and novelist Beatrix Potter lived at the Hill Top Beatrix Potter House (50 minutes) and Yew Tree Farm (35 minutes). The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (55 minutes) explores her tales in more detail. Up next, more historical places? Ambleside Roman Fort (50 minutes), Sizergh (55 minutes) or Muncaster Castle (20 minutes), perhaps?
